The origins of the cathedral lie in the 10th century, when Zeitz became an episcopal see and a Romanesque Basilica was built. The impressive crypt, one of the oldest in Germany, is an outstanding testimony to this era and is a stop on the ‘Romanesque Road’. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the Romanesque Basilica was converted into a Gothic Hall church. The characteristic figures of the apostles and the medieval bronze grave slabs in the choir area bear witness to the artistic diversity of that time. Étape importante de la « Route romane », elle rassemble plusieurs siècles d'évolutions architecturales et reflète l'histoire mouvementée de la région. Aujourd'hui, elle n'est pas seulement un lieu de culte, mais aussi un lieu de rencontre culturel au rayonnement suprarégional. La cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul, nichée dans le complexe baroque du château de Moritzburg, a plus de mille ans d'histoire. Les origines de la cathédrale remontent au Xe siècle, lorsque Zeitz devint siège épiscopal et qu'une basilique romane fut construite. L'impressionnante crypte, l'une des plus anciennes cryptes-halles d'Allemagne, est un témoignage exceptionnel de cette époque et constitue une étape de la « Route romane ». Au XIVe et XVe siècle, la basilique romane a été transformée en une église-halle gothique. Les statues caractéristiques des apôtres et les dalles funéraires médiévales en bronze dans le chœur témoignent de la diversité artistique de cette époque.
