Historia Bad Berki przybrała decydujący obrót w 1816 roku, kiedy to niszczycielski pożar zniszczył niemal całe centrum miasta.
The history of Bad Berka took a decisive turn in 1816, when a devastating fire destroyed nearly the entire downtown area. In the wake of this tragedy, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe—an enthusiastic spa guest—joined forces with master architect Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray to introduce the Classicist style to the small town, thereby laying the foundation for its reconstruction. New life emerged from the ashes: As early as April 2, 1817, the reopening was celebrated around the market square, and Berka shone in new splendor. Thanks to great dedication, the historic center has been preserved in the Classicist style from the 19th century to the present day. The ensemble of buildings surrounding the market square has been carefully expanded and reconstructed and is now designated as a protected historic district.
