Johann Christian Ernst Friedrich Preller the Elder was born on April 25, 1804, in Eisenach, the second of five children of an artistically gifted confectioner. That same year, the family moved to Weimar, where he later attended high school through the upper secondary level. He received his training at the Weimar School of Drawing and later worked there as a teacher and director. He was supported early on by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who arranged study visits for him to Dresden and Antwerp as well as scholarships. In 1824, Preller accompanied the Grand Duke of Weimar to the Netherlands and further developed his artistic skills. Between 1827 and 1831, Preller traveled to Italy. After Goethe’s death, he was permitted to sketch the poet on his deathbed. Beginning in 1833, he taught at the Weimar School of Drawing. Further travels, including trips to Norway and Italy, inspired many of his landscape paintings. In 1844, he became a professor and court painter. Preller remained a defining figure in the Weimar art scene for decades and headed the drawing school starting in 1868. He undertook numerous study trips, for example to Friesland, where he created studies of nature. His nephew Julius Preller also later became known as a landscape painter. In his private life, Preller was married twice and had three sons, including Friedrich Preller the Younger, who also became a painter. His home is still located on Belvederer Allee in Weimar. Preller died in Weimar in 1878 and was buried there. His influence on 19th-century German painting remained significant even after his death, as evidenced, among other things, by the grand celebrations marking his 100th birthday in 1904
