Halle (Saale) (etwa vom Ende des 15. bis zum Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts Hall in Sachsen, bis Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts offiziell Halle an der Saale, von 1965 bis 1995 Halle/Saale) ist eine kreisfreie Großstadt im Süden von Sachsen-Anhalt in Deutschland und mit 242.083 Einwohnern (Stand 31. Dezember 2022) die viertgrößte Stadt der neuen Bundesländer, größte Stadt Sachsen-Anhalts und stand 2022 auf der Liste der Großstädte in Deutschland auf Platz 31. Die Stadt ist Sitz des Landesverwaltungsamtes, der Cyberagentur des Bundes und der Nationalen Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina sowie der Kulturstiftung des Bundes, die für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland die Aufgaben der offiziellen internationalen Vertretung der nationalen Wissenschaft sowie der deutschen Kultur haben. Die Stadt bildet gemeinsam mit der benachbarten Metropole Leipzig den Ballungsraum Leipzig-Halle, in dem mehr als eine Million Menschen leben, sowie mit Leipzig und fünf weiteren Städten in Sachsen-Anhalt, Sachsen und Thüringen die Metropolregion Mitteldeutschland. Halle ist eines der drei Oberzentren des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt, ist ein bedeutender Verkehrsknotenpunkt sowie ein wichtiges Wissenschafts- und Wirtschaftszentrum in den ostdeutschen Bundesländern. Die Stadt liegt im so genannten Chemiedreieck zwischen Schkopau und Bitterfeld-Wolfen. Die erste urkundliche Erwähnung datiert auf das Jahr 806. Mit den durch August Hermann Francke 1698 gegründeten Franckeschen Stiftungen gilt Halle als Ausgangspunkt der sozial-humanistischen Bildung in Deutschland. Halle ist die einzige deutsche Großstadt, die in der Zeit des Zweiten Weltkrieges mehr als 200.000 Einwohner hatte und nicht großflächig zerstört wurde, sodass ihr städtebaulich-denkmalpflegerischer Gesamtzustand unter den Großstädten als einzigartig gilt. In Halle befindet sich eine der ältesten Universitäten Deutschlands, die Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, sowie die Evangelische Hochschule für Kirchenmusik Halle und die Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle. Im Stadtgebiet befindet sich eine Vielzahl von bedeutenden kulturellen und musealen Einrichtungen, wie das Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale), das Händel-Geburtshaus und das Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte mit der Himmelsscheibe von Nebra, die zum UNESCO-Weltdokumentenerbe zählt. In Halle wird das Zukunftszentrum für Deutsche Einheit und Europäische Transformation entstehen.

Together with the neighboring metropolis of Leipzig, the city forms the Leipzig-Halle conurbation, which is home to more than one million people, and with Leipzig and five other cities in Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia, the metropolitan region of Central Germany. Halle is one of the three regional centers of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, is an important transport hub and an important scientific and economic center in the eastern German states. The city is located in the so-called chemical triangle between Schkopau and Bitterfeld-Wolfen. The first documentary reference dates back to 806. With the Francke Foundations founded by August Hermann Francke in 1698, Halle is considered the starting point of social-humanistic education in Germany. Halle is the only major German city that had more than 200,000 inhabitants during the Second World War and was not extensively destroyed, meaning that its overall condition in terms of urban planning and monument preservation is unique among major cities. Halle is home to one of the oldest universities in Germany, the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, as well as the Protestant University of Church Music Halle and the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle. The city is home to a number of important cultural and museum facilities, such as the Moritzburg Art Museum in Halle (Saale), the Handel Birthplace and the State Museum of Prehistory with the Nebra Sky Disk, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Future Center for German Unity and European Transformation will be built in Halle.
