Sukzession Sukzession bedeutet im Hainich Entwicklung zum Laubmischwald. Nach Ende der militärischen Nutzung und der Schafbeweidung kann man nun auf den ehemaligen Schießbahnen Sukzession vom dichtfilzigen Gräserstadium mit Disteln, Karden, Wegwarte und Johanniskraut am Wegesrand über das nach und nach dichter werdende Gebüschstadium aus Schlehen und Rosen bis zum Eschen-Jungwald, in dem schon einzelne Buchen wachsen, beobachten. Der Wanderer bewegt sich oberhalb des Saugrabens entlang, bis der Weg nach links durch Eschen-Jungwald über die Triftchaussee in einen strukturreichen Laubmischwald führt. Welterbegebiet Der Wald ist hier alt, urwüchsig und strukturreich. Es wird deutlich: Hier ist Welterbegebiet. Der Weg schlängelt nun vorbei an stehendem und liegendem Totholz ins Brunstal. Totholz bietet Raum für neues Leben. Abgestorbene oder vom Sturm umgeworfene Bäume sind Teil der natürlichen Waldentwicklung; sie verbleiben im Wald und werden einem jahrzehntelangen Zersetzungsprozess überlassen. Totholz ist Existenzgrundlage für ungefähr 520 holzbewohnende Käfer- und 1.650 Pilzarten. Auch suchen Spechte hier nach Nahrung und bauen Bruthöhlen, die später von Waldkauz und Fledermäusen genutzt werden. Brunstal Das Brunstal ist im Frühjahr von tausenden Märzenbechern gesäumt. Stellenweise hat sich das Wasser nach starken Regenfällen und der Schneeschmelze über 3 m tief in den Talgrund eingegraben. Verstärkt wachsen hier neben der Buche auch Eschen und Ahorne. Besondere Vorsicht und Achtsamkeit erfordert der nächste Wegabschnitt, da die seltene Wildkatze im Tal verschiedene Schlupfwinkel und Ruheplätze hat. Bitte bleiben Sie auf dem Wanderweg! Auf der kleinen Kreuzung neben der Streuobstwiese zweigt der Wanderweg Saugraben nach links zum Parkplatz "Am Zollgarten" oder er führt gerade weiter zum Parkplatz "Fuchsfarm", wo eine Rast mit selbstgebacknem Kuchen und zünftiger Brotzeit in der "Brotzeit Fuchsfarm" lockt.  Streuobstwiesen Die Streuobstwiese ist zu jeder Jahreszeit sehenswert. Im Frühling von Tausenden Blüten verzaubert, reifen über Sommer und Herbst die Früchte und im Winter stehen kahl und erstarrt knorrige Baumgestalten. Die alten Obstbäume sind aber auch wichtiger Lebensort für eine Vielzahl von Tieren.  Vom Parkplatz "Fuchsfarm" aus durchschreitet man eine Streuobstwiese und biegt an der Kreuzung nach rechts. Über die Triftchaussee führt der Weg in den Wald, vorbei an einem Erlenbruch bis zum Hünenteich. Von hier geht es bergauf zu den Wällen der Hünenburg, einem ehemaligen Bergeplatz, am Kellerloch vorbei, und der Wanderer verlässt wieder den Wald. Hier befand sich einst die Dorfstelle Graurode. Die Wüstung Graurode Rund um den Hainich gibt es etwa 40 aufgegebene Siedlungen. Die Mehrzahl, so auch Graurode oder auch Gravenode, entstand im 10./11. Jahrhundert und war bis spätestens Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts bereits wieder wüst gefallen. Zum Wüstwerden trugen hauptsächlich Pestepidemien und wirtschaftliche Gründe aufgrund unfruchtbarer Böden und Wassermangel bei.  UBiS und WiKaKiWa Heute befindet sich hier die Umweltbildungsstation UBiS, in der kleine und große Kinder die Natur erforschen. Arriving at the Triftchaussee, the hiker turns right and reaches the site of the former fox farm. At the small crossroads next to the orchard meadow, the Saugraben hiking trail branches off to the left to the car park "Am Zollgarten" or it continues straight on to the car park "Fuchsfarm" , where a rest with homemade cake and hearty snacks in the "Brotzeit Fuchsfarm" is tempting. Orchard meadows The orchard meadow is worth seeing at any time of year. Enchanted by thousands of blossoms in spring, the fruits ripen over summer and autumn, and in winter the gnarled tree shapes stand bare and frozen. The old fruit trees are also an important habitat for a variety of animals. From the "Fuchsfarm" car park, walk through a meadow orchard and turn right at the crossroads. Via the Triftchaussee, the trail leads into the forest, past an alder quarry to the Hünenteich pond. From here it goes uphill to the ramparts of the Hünenburg, a former salvage yard, past the so called "Kellerloch" (cellar hole), and the hiker leaves the forest again. The village of Graurode was once located here. The Graurode Deserted Site There are about 40 abandoned settlements around the Hainich. Most of them, including Graurode or Gravenode, were founded in the 10th/11th century and had become deserted by the middle of the 14th century at the latest. The desertification was mainly caused by plague epidemics and economic reasons due to infertile soil and lack of water. UBiS and WiKaKiWa Today, the "UBiS" environmental education station is located here, where young and old children can explore nature.
