Remains of the water castle

It is assumed that the water castle was built on the foundations of an older castle. Owners included the counts of Käfernburg (Arnstadt), Schwarzburg, and Henneberg. In 1289, the complex was reportedly destroyed by Rudolph of Habsburg together with the citizens of Erfurt because the Ilmenau castle men were accused of highway robbery. 29 robber knights were beheaded in Erfurt at that time.
Protestant city church St. James

The late Gothic nave with its flying buttresses and polygonal choir closure mostly dates from the late 15th century. Several city fires destroyed the church, especially the interiors. The greatest city fire in 1752 left only the outer walls standing. In 1760/61, the church was rebuilt under the direction of architect A. F. Straßburger and transformed in a late Baroque style. The organ was built in 1911 by the Walcker company from Ludwigsburg. The largest instrument of its kind in Thuringia was restored faithfully and completely. On the church square, a three-flame candelabrum commemorates the 350th anniversary of the Reformation in the Henneberg region, celebrated in 1894.
Pass the church on the right, then keep right again and walk through Spitalgasse towards the pedestrian zone.
As a symbol of Ilmenau's long tradition of glassmaking, this interesting time display was created. Three glass tubes with different diameters are filled from below with a frost-proof liquid depending on the time. On a scale arranged between the tubes for hours and minutes, time can be read according to the liquid level. The liquid chronometer is controlled by a radio clock, ensuring an accurate time display including the switch to Central European Summer Time or Central European Time.

Old forester's lodge

Between 1730 and 1746, Duke Ernst August of Saxe-Weimar had a Rococo palace built by Baroque architect Gottfried Heinrich Krohne. In 1752, the city fire largely destroyed the princely summer residence. However, a side building has survived to this day – the old forester's lodge. A model of the palace can be seen in the GoetheCityMuseum.
Back in the pedestrian zone, you will meet three beautiful old town buildings.

Charlotte von Stein stayed at the Posthof in the summer of 1776, fulfilling Goethe's wish to visit him in Ilmenau. Here lived until 1802 Corona Schröter, a beautiful, celebrated singer and actress at the Weimar court. As the first "Iphigenie" actress, she was very close to J. W. v.
The Baroque old mining house was already depicted on a mining map in 1730. It is assumed that tools and ore supplies were stored here and it was also used as a mining smithy. J. W. v. The inscriptions above the portal commemorate the city fires of 1603, 1624, and 1752.
Henne fountain
Henne fountain built around 1752 at the marketplace. Standing on a stone mount, until the early 1960s, the heraldic animal of the counts of Henneberg spouted water from a raised beak into a copper basin. With its claws, the hen holds the Saxon coat of arms.
In front of the Ilmenau Information, turn north.
After the city fire of 1752, the complex was demolished for stone extraction.
Back towards the marketplace, keep left past the courthouse.
Old Mint
In the 16th century, a free courtyard of the mine owners. Mint established in 1691. One of the few buildings spared from the 1752 city fire. Turn right again back to the marketplace. Heading south on Marktstraße, you see on the left the
Protestant city church St.
Here keep left and you will come across the
Weather column
The weather column was donated by the "Thuringian Glass Instrument Factory Alt, Eberhardt, and Jäger." The animal images in the column's gables symbolize the times of day and thus the cardinal directions: the rooster the morning, the bee swarm the midday, the bat the evening, and the owl the night.
Opposite on the left, you will find the
City model
Model of Ilmenau's old town cast in bronze, street names marked with Braille (blind writing).
Nearby is Wetzlaer Platz where you will find the liquid chronometer and the old forester's lodge.
Liquid chronometer
City pharmacy
The old city pharmacy has remained largely in its original form since its reconstruction after the 1752 city fire.
Allegory on the commercial building
Merkuria holds her protective hand over trade and commerce and gives hope for good business.
Sächsischer Hof and ensemble at the city pharmacy
In the former "Posthof" or "Sächsischer Hof," Goethe gave the opening speech in 1784 for the resumption of copper and silver mining. W. v. Goethe.
The path leads us further along Straße des Friedens.
Former hotel "Zum Löwen"
The residential and commercial building built in 1998 was adapted to the historic inn. Here Goethe celebrated
his 82nd – his last – birthday in 1831. Goethe had traveled from Weimar to Ilmenau and spent
six days here, which were "the brightest days of the whole summer" for him. Adjacent to the former inn was a city gate, the Endleichtor. After its demolition in 1788, the coat of arms stones were embedded in the opposite house.
Coat of arms stones (House of Gifts, Lindenstr. 4)
The right stone shows the Henneberg-Schleusingen coat of arms with the Saxon coat of arms as the heart shield. On the left is the Ilmenau city coat of arms. The leaves above the coat of arms may indicate that these are leaves of an elm, the tree that gave the Ilm river and the city their names.
Goat fountain
In front of the "Löwen" stands the Goat Fountain by sculptor Volkmar Kühn since 1998. Two goats dance on a sandstone pedestal, on which the well-known verse "In Ilmenau, the sky is blue, the billy goat dances with his wife" (children's rhyme) can be read.
A short way later, you see on the right the
Wenzel House
The house was named after the former owners, the Wenzel family. In Goethe's time and the following years, the house served as a post station. From 1800 to 1804, Karl Ludwig von Knebel, Goethe's "oldest friend," lived in this house.
From here, take the zigzag path "Am Terppenschacht" upwards to Zechhausstraße.
Miners' chapel
Hardly any written records have survived. This little house probably belonged to the wheelhouse below the shaft "Gottes Gabe." Here were water wheels to drive the pumps in the shaft.
Old mining house
The Baroque old mining house was already depicted on a mining map in 1730. It is assumed that tools and ore supplies were stored here and it was also used as a mining smithy. J. W. v. Goethe often stayed here in his capacity as head of the mining commission.
Via the new Marienstraße towards the lawn, you reach the Ilmenau city cemetery.
Grave of Corona Schröter
Right at the entrance of the cemetery, Corona Schröter found her final resting place. Only a few steps away are other graves of Goethe's contemporaries.
When you leave the cemetery, continue straight ahead. Here you reach the starting point again, the Ilmenau marketplace.
We wish you a pleasant and worthwhile walk. |
