Erstes Ziel der Wanderung ist das Naturdenkmal Salzaspring, eine der drei großen Karstquellen des Südharzes. Das Wasser braucht neun Monate, um von den Ver-sinkungsstellen der Südharzflüsse Steina, Uffe, Wieda und Zorge unterirdisch zur Salzaquelle zu gelangen. Auf dem Karstwanderweg führt die Route nach Westen entlang des Hirschenteiches über das Kohnsteinmassiv bis zu den Sattelköpfen am nördlichen Ortsrand von Hörningen. Die Sattelköpfe bilden mit ihrer Schichtstufe den Südhang des Auslaugungstales der Wieda, die im Tale je nach Wassersituation oberirdisch oder unterirdisch fließt. In nördlicher Richtung liegt das Gipsgestein frei und bildet eine reich strukturierte Karstlandschaft mit Dolinen und Uvalas. Die Landschaft besteht aus einem Wechsel von Wald, Gebüschen, Mager- und Trockenrasenflächen und einzelnen Dolomit- und Gipsfelsen mit Felsflurvegetation. Die Sattelköpfe gehören botanisch zu den wertvollsten Bereichen der Südharzer Karstlandschaft und stehen unter Naturschutz. Der Pfad geht als Teil des Karstwanderwegs hinab ins Wiedatal. Hier besteht eine kurze Wegeverbindung zum Bahnhof Woffleben. Unser Weg geht nach Osten, vorbei am Fuß eines Gipssteinbruchs und weiter nach Südosten auf dem Kaiserweg durch den Kohnsteinforst über das Gelände der KZ-Gedenkstätte Mittelbau-Dora zurück zum "Salzaspring". Es empfiehlt sich ein Besuch der KZ-Gedenkstätte mit einer Führung durch die Stollen, in denen ab 1943 Tausende von KZ-Häftlingen unter menschenverachtenden Bedingungen zur Zwangsarbeit beim Bau von Raketen eingesetzt und ums Leben gebracht wurden.

Le premier objectif de la randonnée est le monument naturel Salzaspring, l'une des trois grandes sources karstiques du Sudharz. L'eau met neuf mois pour atteindre la source Salza depuis les points de disparition des rivières du Sudharz Steina, Uffe, Wieda et Zorge par un trajet souterrain. Le parcours du Karstwanderweg mène vers l'ouest le long de l'étang Hirschenteich, en passant par le massif de Kohnstein jusqu'aux Sattelköpfe à la limite nord de Hörningen. Les Sattelköpfe forment, avec leur escarpement, le versant sud de la vallée d'érosion de la Wieda, qui s'écoule soit en surface soit en souterrain selon la situation de l'eau. Au nord, le gypse est à nu et forme un paysage karstique richement structuré avec dolines et ouvalas. Le paysage est composé d'une alternance de forêts, buissons, prairies maigres et sèches ainsi que de rochers dolomitiques et gypseux avec une végétation rupicole. Les Sattelköpfe font partie des zones botaniquement les plus précieuses du paysage karstique du Sudharz et sont protégés. Le sentier descend en tant que partie du Karstwanderweg dans la vallée de la Wieda. Il y a ici une courte liaison vers la gare de Woffleben. Notre chemin va vers l'est, passant au pied d'une carrière de gypse, puis vers le sud-est sur le Kaiserweg à travers la forêt de Kohnstein, passant sur le terrain du mémorial du camp de concentration Mittelbau-Dora pour revenir à la « Salzaspring ». Une visite du mémorial avec une visite guidée des galeries est recommandée, où, à partir de 1943, des milliers de prisonniers des camps de concentration ont été exploités dans des conditions inhumaines pour le travail forcé dans la construction de fusées et y ont perdu la vie.

The first destination of the hike is the natural monument Salzaspring, one of the three major karst springs of the South Harz. The water takes nine months to travel underground from the sinking points of the South Harz rivers Steina, Uffe, Wieda and Zorge to the Salza spring. On the Karst hiking trail, the route leads west along the Hirschenteich pond over the Kohnstein massif to the Sattelköpfe at the northern edge of Hörningen. The Sattelköpfe form the southern slope of the leaching valley of the Wieda with their stratigraphic step, which flows above ground or underground in the valley depending on the water conditions. To the north, the gypsum rock lies exposed and forms a richly structured karst landscape with sinkholes and uvalas. The landscape consists of a mix of forest, bushes, poor and dry grasslands, and individual dolomite and gypsum rocks with cliff flora vegetation. Botanically, the Sattelköpfe are among the most valuable areas of the South Harz karst landscape and are under nature conservation. The path goes down into the Wiedatal as part of the Karst hiking trail. There is a short connecting path to Woffleben station here. Our route goes east, past the foot of a gypsum quarry and further southeast on the Kaiserweg through the Kohnstein forest over the grounds of the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp memorial back to "Salzaspring". A visit to the concentration camp memorial with a guided tour through the tunnels is recommended, where from 1943 thousands of concentration camp prisoners were used for forced labor under inhumane conditions in the construction of rockets and lost their lives.
