Today, the history of Merseburg as a royal palace, residence of bishops, a duchy, and from 1815 as the seat of the government of the Prussian Province of Saxony can be discovered in many, partly unique testimonies. Among the special tourist attractions are the Merseburg museums and galleries. Generously laid-out parks and green spaces form a charming complement to the cultural and architectural sights. You begin your tour in the city center, at Entenplan directly at the St. Maximi City Church: The neo-Gothic tower, built from 1867 to 1872 after a fire in the tower apartment, is with 70 m the tallest building in the city. 174 steps must be overcome to look over the city. Remarkable is the organ from 1876, which today sounds at services and concerts. You go directly from the city church to the market. On the Merseburg Market Place is the Staupen fountain from 1545. The fountain, as we know it, was established in 1861 on the initiative of Mayor Heinrich Seffner. Its name "Staupen fountain" originates from a medieval corporal punishment where the convicted was beaten at the pillory or the staup column. Our path continues along Burgstraße to the "Old Town Hall": remarkable are the numerous bishop's coats of arms on the town hall façade. Only in 1692 was the city coat of arms added last. After a short walk, you reach the Krummes Tor: The Krummes Tor is part of the outer city wall of the high medieval fortification on the cathedral hill and consists of a gate tower and gate structure. The gate tower was converted in 2006 for private residential use. Passing the Willi-Sitte-Galerie, we go directly over the cathedral square to Merseburg Cathedral. The Merseburg Cathedral of St. John and St. Lawrence is considered one of the outstanding architectural monuments along the "Road of Romanesque" due to its furnishings. The altar retables, sculptures, epitaphs, paintings, and manuscripts exhibited in the cathedral and its treasury, including the famous Merseburg Incantations, are of special cultural-historical significance. A special acoustic experience is offered by the romantic Ladegast organ. Directly adjoining the cathedral is the mighty palace complex. Merseburg Palace with Cultural History Museum: This is attributable to the extensive building activity of Bishop Thilo von Trotha. After the demolition of the predecessor building from the 13th century, he began rebuilding the palace, which was partially changed and expanded by his successors. Noteworthy: coats of arms panels, portals, bay windows from late Gothic and Renaissance. In addition to the Cultural History Museum, the district administration of Saalekreis and the district music school are located in the palace. Raven Cage - Merseburg Raven Legend: The stone raven cage in the palace courtyard keeps alive the well-known raven legend associated with Bishop Thilo von Trotha. According to the legend, the bishop, ruling Merseburg in the 15th century, had his loyal servant executed because the servant was suspected of stealing a valuable ring from his master. Later, during roof work at Merseburg Palace, the ring was discovered in a raven's nest. As a warning never to judge in anger, Thilo von Trotha had a raven captured. Out of remorse, he changed his family coat of arms and adopted a raven with a golden ring in its beak in his shield. A pair of ravens still lives in Merseburg Palace today. Between palace and palace garden salon lies the palace garden. Originally designed as a baroque pleasure garden, it was later landscaped by Peter Joseph Lenné and underwent a redesign in formal style in 1968. The well-maintained area offers charming views of the cathedral, palace, and Saale river. Approximately 200 meters along Oberaltenburg past the Upper Waterworks leads to Peterskloster. The Peterskloster or Petrikloster in the north of the city center is considered the nucleus of the city of Merseburg with its over 1200-year history and holds great significance for the city's history and surroundings. After decades of vacancy, vandalism, and failed attempts to use the building, the valuable structure was in a catastrophic condition. Today, the non-profit Förderkreis Klosterbauhütte association is committed to preserving the monastery. On our way back along Oberaltenburg, we come to the Ständehaus. Ständehaus: Today's Ständehaus Merseburg Congress and Cultural Center is firmly rooted in the city's history of democracy. After the victory over Napoleon, the final act of the Congress of Vienna in 1815 determined that the Kingdom of Prussia also received parts of northern Saxony. From these was founded the Prussian Province of Saxony with the administrative districts of Erfurt, Magdeburg, and Merseburg, with Merseburg designated as the meeting place. On October 2, 1825, the first provincial parliament met in the palace garden salon. Finally, on March 12, 1892, the 13th provincial parliament approved the city's offer to build a new Ständehaus. A representative building was created, the plenary hall of which later received a coffered ceiling and monumental paintings by Hugo Vogel. Since October 3, 2003, after extensive restoration, the Ständehaus has made a name for itself nationwide as a congress and cultural venue. Returning to the cathedral square, passing the cathedral and the European Romanesque Center, you reach Dompropstei Street. A path on the left leads through a narrow alley, and via a staircase you reach Saale Bridge. From here, there is an incomparable view over Neumarkt. Looking left from Saale Bridge offers an unobstructed view of Mühleninsel. Across the Saale is the Neumarkt Church St. Thomae, a gem on the Road of Romanesque. The largely original Romanesque cruciform basilica was first mentioned in a document of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa in 1188. Unique in the central German region is the knot column at the late Romanesque main portal. Inside are testimonies of contemporary sacred art. The church serves as a pilgrim hostel on the ecumenical pilgrim path. Returning over the bridge and continuing toward Oelgrube, you reach the Kunsthaus Tiefer Keller on the right. In the Kunsthaus Tiefer Keller is the entrance to the historic vaulted cellars, which belong to the oldest parts of the city and are accessible all year round. Artists design the vaults, thereby creating a connection between tangible art and history. Above ground, visitors can expect diverse art exhibitions in a unique ambiance. At the end of the street, you reach Burgstraße and end your tour opposite the city church at the Merseburg Tourist Information.
