Der Weiße Stein gilt als beliebtes Ausflugsziel und liegt auf der Anhöhe zwischen Gräfenroda und Geschwenda. Von dort aus hat der Wanderer einen schönen Ausblick über die Ausläufer des Thüringer Waldes bis zu dessen Kamm: dem 978 Meter hohen Schneekopf bei Gehlberg sowie zur „Hohen Warte“ bei Elgersburg und nach Gräfenroda.  Auf den Plateauflächen der Muschelkalkplatten zwischen den beiden Gebirgsbächen Wilde und Zahme Gera wurde früher Ackerbau betrieben. Heute ist hier ein neuer Wald entstanden. Ein Waldlehrpfad erklärt die 28 unterschiedlichen Baumarten. Rund 165 000 Bäume wurden parzellenweise neu gepflanzt, sodass sich seit 1995 ein artenreicher Wald etabliert hat. Gerade im Herbst bieten die unterschiedlichen Baumarten einen bunten Mix. Die umgebenden Kalkgesteine haben ihren Ursprung im Muschelkalkmeer, das sich hier im Zeitalter der Trias über mehrere Millionen Jahre ausgebreitet hat. Sie gehören zur verkarsteten Ilm-Saale und Ohrdrufer-Platte, die hier in der Gemeinde Geratal an die Thüringer-Wald-Scholle stößt. Von den steilen Abbruchkannten bieten sich weite Ausblicke zum Mittleren Thüringer Wald.

Le Weißer Stein est une destination de sortie populaire située sur la colline entre Gräfenroda et Geschwenda. De là, le randonneur bénéficie d’une belle vue sur les contreforts de la forêt de Thuringe jusqu'à sa crête : le Schneekopf haut de 978 mètres près de Gehlberg ainsi que la « Hohe Warte » près d'Elgersburg et Gräfenroda. Sur les plateaux des plaques de calcaire coquillier entre les deux ruisseaux de montagne Wilde et Zahme Gera, l’agriculture était pratiquée autrefois. Aujourd'hui, une nouvelle forêt s'y est développée. Un sentier pédagogique explique les 28 espèces d'arbres différentes. Environ 165 000 arbres ont été replantés par parcelles, ce qui a permis d’établir depuis 1995 une forêt riche en espèces. Surtout en automne, les différentes espèces d'arbres offrent un mélange coloré. Les roches calcaires environnantes ont leur origine dans la mer de calcaire coquillier qui s’est étendue ici à l’époque du Trias pendant plusieurs millions d'années. Elles appartiennent à la plaque karstifiée Ilm-Saale et Ohrdrufer, qui ici dans la commune de Geratal touche le bloc de la forêt de Thuringe. Des falaises escarpées offrent de larges vues sur la forêt de Thuringe centrale.

The White Stone is a popular excursion destination and is situated on the elevation between Gräfenroda and Geschwenda. From there, hikers have a beautiful view over the foothills of the Thuringian Forest to its ridge: the 978-meter-high Schneekopf near Gehlberg as well as the "Hohe Warte" near Elgersburg and towards Gräfenroda. On the plateau areas of the shell limestone slabs between the two mountain streams Wilde and Zahme Gera, agriculture was previously practiced. Today, a new forest has emerged here. A forest nature trail explains the 28 different tree species. Around 165,000 trees were replanted in plots so that, since 1995, a species-rich forest has been established. Especially in autumn, the different tree species offer a colorful mix. The surrounding limestone rocks originate from the shell limestone sea, which spread here during the Triassic period over several million years. They belong to the karstified Ilm-Saale and Ohrdruf plate, which here in the municipality of Geratal meets the Thuringian Forest block. From the steep edges, wide views of the Central Thuringian Forest are offered.
