The Weißenfels cobbler boy, actually a city boy, got his name from the deeply rooted shoemaking tradition in Weißenfels. The Novalis grave, marked by a bust, commemorates one of Weißenfels’ most famous sons, Friedrich von Hardenberg (1772–1801). Better known by his pen name Novalis, he found his final resting place here, on the former cemetery. He was barely 30 years old. 6 St. Clare’s Monastery The former Poor Clare monastery was built in 1301 at the current location. After the introduction of the Reformation, it became a women's collegiate foundation from 1540 onwards. Markt 1, 06667 Weißenfels, www.weissenfels.de 9 St. Mary's Church The city church of St. Mary was consecrated in 1303. The late Gothic three-naved hall church was extensively renovated and enlarged in the 15th/16th centuries. After a destructive fire in 1718, the church tower was rebuilt in the baroque style. Temporarily, the city church also served as a representative court church, from which time the most important furnishings originate. The organ of the city church was built by Weißenfels organ builder Friedrich Ladegast in 1862/64 and served as his demonstration instrument.
