The church belonged to a former Augustinian convent that was founded in the 12th century. After the decline of the convent, only part of the church was used as a village church, while the majority fell into disrepair. Additions and alterations changed the character of the church over the following centuries. In the 19th century, plans were made to rebuild the monastery church as faithfully as possible. The monastery church was re-consecrated in 1866 and is considered one of the most beautiful churches in eastern Thuringia. With its old Romanesque east and new Romanesque west sections and a length of 48 meters and a width of 37 meters, the monastery church presents itself as a masterpiece of 19th century architecture. The church can be visited on certain dates, which are published on the homepage of the Evangelical Lutheran parish. It is also possible to collect the key from the parish office and view the church on your own.

Die Kirche gehörte zu einem ehemaligen Augustinerinnenkloster, das im 12. Jahrhundert gegründet wurde. Nach dem Niedergang des Klosters wurde nur noch ein Teil der Kirche als Dorfkirche genutzt, während der Großteil verfiel. An- und Umbauten veränderten den Charakter des Gotteshauses in den folgenden Jahrhunderten. Im 19. Jahrhundert wurden Pläne, die Klosterkirche möglichst originalgetreu wieder aufzubauen, umgesetzt. 1866 wurde die Klosterkirche neu geweiht. Die sehenswerte Pfeilerbasilika gilt als eines der schönsten Gotteshäuser in Ostthüringen. Mit ihrem altromanischen Ost- und neuromanischen Westteil sowie einer Länge von 48 Metern und einer Breite von 37 Metern präsentiert sich die Klosterkirche als Meisterwerk der Baukunst des 19. Jahrhunderts. Zu bestimmten Terminen, die auf der Homepage der Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirchengemeinde veröffentlicht werden, kann die Kirche besichtigt werden. Außerdem besteht die Möglichkeit, den Schlüssel im Pfarramt abzuholen und die Kirche selbständig anzusehen.
