Die Kleinstadt Gößnitz als erfüllende Gemeinde für Ponitz und Heyersdorf hat rund 3.400 Einwohner. Am 17. August 1253 fand Gößnitz erstmals urkundlich Erwähnung und am 18. März 1718 wurde das Stadtrecht verliehen. Interessant auch: In Gößnitz befindet sich mit 610 Metern der längste überdachte Bahnsteig Deutschlands. Hier treffen die Nord-Süd-Magistrale Berlin-Leipzig-Altenburg-Hof-München und die West-Ost-Magistrale Frankfurt-Erfurt-Gößnitz-Dresden aufeinander. Auch im kulturellen Bereich hat Gößnitz etwas zu bieten. Der denkmalgeschützte Winkelhof zum Beispiel fungiert seit 1999 als Heimatstube. Der dort präsentierte umfangreiche Fundus ist von Mai bis Oktober jeweils Samstag und Sonntag sowie nach Vereinbarung zu besichtigen. Über die Landkreisgrenzen hinaus bekannt ist das Kabarett "Die Nörgelsäcke". Die sogenannte "Große Schule" wurde von der städtischen Wohnungsgesellschaft zu einem Wohnhaus umgebaut, die "Kleine Schule" ebenfalls neuen Nutzern zugeführt. Bereits 1996 zog im Erdgeschoss die Stadtbibliothek ein. Nach weiteren Umbauarbeiten entstand schließlich das KulturCentrum Gößnitz. Im Erdgeschoss wurde aus zwei ehemaligen Klassenräumen ein Saal mit ca. 100 Sitzplätzen für Konzerte und andere Veranstaltungen geschaffen. Im 1. Obergeschoss können die Vereine mehrere Räume nutzen. Das Dachgeschoss wurde der Johann-Friedrich-Agricola-Musikschule, Außenstelle Gößnitz, übergeben. Die ehemalige Turnhalle neben dem Rathaus wurde in eine Stadthalle umgebaut und 2001 eingeweiht. Von 2002 bis 2003 wurde der Freiheitsplatz grundhaft umgestaltet und am 28. August 2003, rechtzeitig vor der 750-Jahrfeier der ersturkundlichen Erwähnung von Gößnitz und 285 Jahre Stadtrecht, feierlich übergeben.
