<p>En 1882, l'association de chant "Liedertafel" de Stadtilm a eu l'idée d'ériger un monument au fils de leur ville natale - Albert Methfessel (* 6 octobre 1785 à Stadtilm, 13e enfant d'un cantor et organiste, nom de baptême : Johann Albrecht Gottlieb ; † 23 mars 1869 à Heckenbeck près de Gandersheim) - à l'occasion du centenaire de sa naissance. Un an plus tard, un comité de fête composé de 12 membres (6 membres actifs de l'association et 6 personnes issues de la bourgeoisie) a été créé. Le docteur Hellbach, médecin à Stadtilm, fut élu président. </p><p>Le financement du monument a été assuré par de nombreux dons et une loterie Methfessel initiée par les femmes des membres du comité. Le tirage public des numéros gagnants eut lieu le 20 mai 1884. Pour l'organisation de la loterie, 2.000 billets ont été vendus. La population et de nombreux sponsors mirent à disposition 492 lots. Le billet coûtait 50 pfennigs. </p><p>Les plans du monument ont été conçus par le sculpteur et architecte Erich Schober, de Halle an der Saale. Le médaillon avec le portrait en relief de Methfessel a été conçu par le professeur G. Kugel de Ruhla. Le 28 juin 1885, une grande fête des chanteurs a permis de dévoiler solennellement le monument. Ce jour-là, la place du marché était décorée de toutes les couleurs et arborait les drapeaux de tous les États allemands dont on attendait les invités. Quarante-deux chorales avaient annoncé leur participation à la fête. Un grand cortège a lancé les festivités à 13h30. Le président du comité, le Dr Hellbach, a dévoilé le monument et l'a remis à la ville en disant "Laissez tomber les housses". </p><p>Après plus de 130 ans, l'affaiblissement de la stabilité des fondations, les épaisses couches de saleté accumulées au cours du siècle industriel précédent et les influences climatiques avaient rendu nécessaire une rénovation complète. En 2016, dans le cadre de la rénovation de la place du marché, le monument a été entièrement démonté et soumis à un assainissement. Depuis le 26 octobre 2016, le monument Methfessel est de nouveau présent sur la place du marché dans une nouvelle optique. Afin de pouvoir utiliser à l'avenir l'espace autour du monument de manière plus optimale, celui-ci a été déplacé d'un mètre en direction de la B87.</p>
