In the Study Centre, library users can view and borrow items from the holdings of the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek at no charge and without a library card. The centrepiece of the building is the modern Book Cube, where temporary exhibitions regularly take place. Some 170,000 volumes are available to users on open-access reference shelves. The Study Centre contains numerous workstations and a reading room. Daily newspapers are available on the ground floor. The lion’s share of the holdings is stored in underground stacks. Individual items can be ordered via the online catalogue and picked up from the lending desk or in the reading room. The reading areas are largely accessible to disabled users and contain countless volumes of socio- and cultural scientific literature and editions, borrowable works of fiction, current journals, e-books, licensed databases, e-journals and a reference shelf devoted to the history of the Buchenwald concentration camp. The Study Centre exemplifies the concept of a “single library”. The modern Study Centre and the Historic Library are connected by a subterranean book repository. The Study Centre was designed by the architects Karl-Heinz Schmitz and Hilde Barz-Malfatti (Weimar) and officially opened in 2005.
Im Studienzentrum können die Bestände der Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek kostenfrei und ohne Bibliotheksausweis ausgeliehen oder benutzt werden. Herzstück des Gebäudes ist der moderne Bücherkubus. Hier finden wechselnde Ausstellungspräsentationen statt. Rund 170.000 Bände sind im Freihandbereich aufgestellt. Es gibt zahlreiche Arbeitsplätze und einen Lesesaal. Das Erdgeschoss bietet aktuelle Tageszeitungen. Der größte Teil der Bestände befindet sich im Magazin und wird nach Bestellung im Online-Katalog an der Ausleihtheke oder im Lesesaal bereitgestellt. Bände aus geistes- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Literatur und Werkausgaben, ausleihbare Belletristik, aktuelle Zeitschriften, Zugang zu E-Books und lizenzierten Datenbanken, E-Journals sowie die Handbibliothek zur Geschichte des Konzentrationslagers Buchenwald sind weitgehend barrierefrei in den Lesebereichen einzusehen. Mit dem Studienzentrum konnte die Idee der „einen Bibliothek“ baulich realisiert werden: Das moderne Studienzentrum und das Historische Gebäude sind durch das Tiefmagazin unterirdisch miteinander verbunden. Der Innenhof des Studienzentrums lädt zum Verweilen ein. Das Studienzentrum wurde von den Architekten Karl-Heinz Schmitz und Hilde Barz-Malfatti (Weimar) entworfen und 2005 eingeweiht.
