About: Erlebnisportal Weimar, Discover Thuringia

The Erlebnis Portal is a central public contact and information centre for visitors in Weimar. Visually captivating short films introduce visitors to Thuringia’s rich cultural landscape. The theme-based films highlight Thuringia’s history, specialties and the most important sites – from its Baroque parks and landscape gardens to the Thuringian Forest, Thuringia’s storied ceramic-making tradition and the birth of German democracy. The newly built portal is architecturally striking, firmly planted atop the so-called “Coudray Wall” on Platz der Demokratie. The environmentally friendly facade is made of birchbark which creates a spatial, aesthetic and thematic link to the historic Park on the Ilm and the buildings of Weimar Classicism. From the viewing platform, visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of the City Castle, the Park on the Ilm and the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek. The courtyard leads to the Study Centre of the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek and the Samocca Café. In addition to the information brochures, visitors can access audio features via a web app. The “virtual excursions” are accompanied by music, composed especially for this project and performed by the double bassist and Echo prizewinner Sebastian Gramss.

Das Erlebnisportal ist ein öffentlicher zentraler Anlauf- und Informationspunkt für Besucher*innen. Visuell beeindruckende thematische Kurzfilme und eine interaktive Videowall führen in die reichhaltige Kulturlandschaft Thüringens ein. Dabei wird auf die bedeutendsten Geschichten und Orte Thüringens eingegangen: von den barocken Parks und Landschaftsgärten über den Thüringer Wald bis hin zur Thüringer Keramiktradition oder der Geburtsstunde der deutschen Demokratie. Besonders auffällig ist der architektonische Neubau des Portals, der sich als markanter Mauerreiter über die historische "Coudray-Mauer" am Platz der Demokratie erhebt. Die umweltfreundliche Fassade aus Birkenrinde schafft eine räumliche, gestalterische und inhaltliche Verknüpfung zwischen dem Gartendenkmal Park an der Ilm und den Gebäuden der Weimarer Klassik. Von der Aussichtsplattform aus bietet sich Ihnen ein herrlicher Ausblick auf das Stadtschloss, den Park an der Ilm und die Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek. Der Innenhof führt zum Studienzentrum der Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek und zum Samocca Café. Zusätzlich zu den Informationsbroschüren stehen begleitende Audiofeatures in der Web-App zur Verfügung. Die „virtuellen Ausflüge“ sind musikalisch mit eigens für das Projekt entstandenen Kompositionen des Kontrabassisten und Echo-Preisträgers Sebastian Grams untermalt.
