Characterized by its baroque half-timbered tower and peaked hipped roofs, the two-story double house was first mentioned in 1365 and is thus one of the oldest preserved town hall buildings in Germany.
On the upper floor is the town hall hall hallway, which is well worth seeing, with a wooden ceiling that has been colored several times over the centuries. The painting visible today dates from the early 20th century.
The baroque, eight-sided tower between the steep hipped roofs was built in 1755, on which there is an astronomical art clock from 1755. Its central figure "Schnapphans" snaps in vain for a golden ball every time the bell strikes the hour. The beautiful story of the Schnapphans and the other Seven Wonders of Jena can also be found in the city museum.
Next to the town hall is an ensemble of commercial buildings completed in 1997, which are called parrot houses because of their colorfulness.
