Historical and Contemporary Caricatures and Mezzotints in the Summer Palace Greiz
The State Collection of Books and Engravings in Greiz was founded in 1922 as a foundation of the elder line of the House of Reuss. The most important part of the collection, the mezzotints, partly after portraits by Sir Joshua Reynolds, comes from the estate of the English Princess Elizabeth (1770-1840). A further focus of the collection is on historical caricatures from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. On the basis of this collection, the "SATIRICUM" was founded in Greiz in 1975. Since 1978, biennials of caricature in the GDR have been held every two years, which have been continued since 1994 in the German Triennial of Caricature. With 10,000 sheets, the Sommerpalais has the most extensive collection of GDR caricature.
