St. Bartholomew’s Church is one of the oldest and most significant churches in Altenburg, impressively combining architecture and history. The first church building was erected here as early as 1100, and the Romanesque crypt from that time has been preserved to this day. It was used as a burial site until the 17th century; the reformer Georg Spalatin was also buried in the church. Since 2017, a monument in front of the church has commemorated this close companion of Martin Luther and important reformer. The present-day church is a late-Gothic hall church featuring an imposing ribbed and star vault, historic murals, and a striking tower with a turret. Those who climb the tower are rewarded with a breathtaking view over the rooftops of Altenburg. Martin Luther also preached here on several occasions, making the church an important site in the history of the Reformation. Another highlight is the Ladegast organ from 1881, which still fills the church interior with its distinctive sound to this day. Thus, St. Bartholomäi is not only a place of tranquility and history, but also a vibrant cultural space where concerts and musical events create a special atmosphere.
