2005 eröffnete der ehrenamtlich geführte Verein “Flugwelt Altenburg-Nobitz e.V.” das Museum. Seit der Eröffnung wurde die Zahl der Ausstellungsstücke und die Qualität der Informationen erweitert und verbessert. Von vielen Besuchern, die als Zeitzeugen den Flugplatz kannten, flossen wertvolle Hinweise in die Ausstellung ein oder waren Ausgangspunkt für weiterreichende Nachforschungen. Dies half, verschiedene historische Abschnitte des Flugplatzes zu erhellen. Neben der geschichtlichen Entwicklung des Flugplatzes finden sich zahlreiche Exponate in der Ausstellung, von Instrumenten und Flugzeugteilen über detailgetreue Modelle bis zu kompletten Flugzeugen.
