Beim Felsentheater handelt es sich um ein Bryozoenriff, bestehend aus dolomitischem Kalkstein des unteren Zechstein. Der derzeitige Innenhof, auch Theaterraum genannt, in dem drei stattliche Buchen stehen, ist im 16. Jahrhundert durch den Einsturz einer Höhlendecke (Erdfall) aus einer Klufthöhle entstanden. Um 1860 herum ist es vom Meininger Herzogshaus zum Theaterplatz erweitert worden und diente zur Aufführung von Theaterstücken des Meininger Hoftheaters. Das Felsentheater zwischen hohen Felswänden in der Einsamkeit des alten Buchenwaldes ist von hohem landschaftlichen Reiz. Jeweils zwei Steintreppen führen zum freien Platz hinauf und hinab. Im Laufe von Jahrzehnten waren diese verfallen und nicht mehr sicher begehbar. Ab Herbst 2002 wurden die unteren Treppen abgebaut und völlig neu mit Geländer wieder errichtet. Die Böschung wurde als Steinwall gestaltet und die oberen Treppen grundlegend ausgebessert. Das Felsentheater ist ein Flächennaturdenkmal, das über wertvolle Pflanzen und Tiergesellschaften verfügt.
Le théâtre de roche est un récif de bryozoaires, composé de calcaire dolomitique du Zechstein inférieur. La cour intérieure actuelle, également appelée salle de théâtre, dans laquelle se dressent trois hêtres majestueux, a été créée au 16ème siècle par l'effondrement du plafond d'une grotte (éboulement) provenant d'une fissure. Vers 1860, il a été agrandi par la maison ducale de Meiningen pour devenir une place de théâtre et servir à la représentation de pièces de théâtre du Meininger Hoftheater. Le théâtre de roche entre de hautes parois rocheuses dans la solitude de la vieille forêt de hêtres est d'un grand attrait paysager. Deux escaliers en pierre montent et descendent respectivement vers la place libre. Au fil des décennies, ils se sont dégradés et ne sont plus praticables en toute sécurité. A partir de l'automne 2002, les escaliers inférieurs ont été démontés et entièrement reconstruits avec des balustrades. Le talus a été aménagé en mur de pierre et les escaliers supérieurs ont été fondamentalement réparés. Le théâtre de roche est un monument naturel de surface qui dispose de plantes et d'associations animales de grande valeur.
The rock theater is a bryozoic reef consisting of dolomitic limestone of the lower Zechstein. The current inner courtyard, also called theater space, in which three stately beech trees stand, was created in the 16th century by the collapse of a cave ceiling (sinkhole) from a fissure cave. Around 1860 it was extended by the ducal house of Meiningen to become a theater space and was used for the performance of plays by the Meiningen court theater. The rock theater between high rock walls in the solitude of the old beech forest is of high scenic charm. Two stone stairs each lead up and down to the open space. Over the decades, these had fallen into disrepair and were no longer safe to walk on. Starting in the fall of 2002, the lower stairs were dismantled and completely rebuilt with railings. The embankment was made into a stone wall and the upper stairs were thoroughly repaired. The rock theater is an area natural monument, which has valuable plant and animal communities.
