Kapellendorf is the mother parish of the Kirchspiel Kapellendorf. Most of the inter-parish events of the Kirchspiel take place here in the parsonage. Since the church cannot be heated, services are only held in it during the summer. Kapellendorf has one of the oldest known churches in Thuringia. A first church existed at this place already in the time around 800. It coined the name of the village: Kapellendorf. Founded as an aristocratic church, the church was donated to the imperial monastery of Fulda in early times. In the 12th century, the parish church was the fiefdom of the Burgraves of Kirchberg, who founded a Cistercian convent here in 1235. The convent of nuns existed for three centuries. In 1525 it was abolished in the course of the Reformation and property and equipment were confiscated. An inventory that still exists today provides information about this. The church was reduced in size and the nuns' choir was demolished in 1528/29. In 1577 at the latest, the southern aisle was also removed. Since then, the Kapellendorf church has again served solely as a parish church. Numerous preserved grave monuments inside testify to the great importance of the church as a place of burial and remembrance in the late Middle Ages and early modern times. In spring 2007, with the support of the village of Kapellendorf and the Gotha District Church Office, the parish was able to re-shingle the roofs of the tower and the choir loft. In 2009, also with the support of the village, the nave was roofed in accordance with the preservation order. In 2017, a Luther tree was planted in front of the church. On June 1, 2003, a new, electronic organ was consecrated. The previous instrument had been improperly removed and stored during renovation work in 1976, which damaged it irreparably. So the people of Kapellendorf decided to buy an electronic organ. The sampled tones sound "true to the organ" from loudspeakers located behind the old organ prospect. In addition to the bronze bell of the company Gebrüder Ulrich (Apolda) from 1787, two chilled iron bells from 1920 of the company Schilling & Lattermann (Apolda and Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz) ring in the tower. Two bronze bells are planned for the latter. A printed theological work from 1566 has been preserved from the Reformation period. It comes from the possession of Simon Hartung, one of the first pastors in Kapellendorf, and contains an accurate library list of the time with many works of leading Protestant theologians.
To właśnie on nadał miejscowości nazwę: Kapellendorf. Kościół został zmniejszony, a chór zakonnic zburzono w latach 1528/29. Liczne zachowane pomniki nagrobne we wnętrzu świadczą o wielkim znaczeniu kościoła jako miejsca pochówku i upamiętnienia w późnym średniowieczu i wczesnej nowożytności. Oprócz dzwonu z brązu firmy Gebrüder Ulrich (Apolda) z 1787 roku w wieży dzwonią dwa dzwony z żeliwa hartowanego z 1920 roku, wyprodukowane przez firmę Schilling & Lattermann (Apolda i Morgenröthe-Rautenkranz). W przypadku tych ostatnich planowane jest zamontowanie dwóch dzwonów z brązu. Z okresu reformacji zachowało się drukowane dzieło teologiczne z 1566 roku. Pochodzi ono z majątku Simona Hartunga, jednego z pierwszych pastorów w Kapellendorfie, i zawiera dokładny spis biblioteczny z tamtego okresu, obejmujący wiele dzieł czołowych teologów ewangelickich.
