Blankenburg is situated in a scenic area in a valley called the "Schlotheimer Grabenbruch", on the edge of the nature reserve "Großes und Kleines Hornholz". The village was first mentioned in a document in 1143 and can look back on a long and eventful past. Storms, diseases and wars left their traces. At the end of the 2nd World War, first the US Army and later the Soviet Army arrived in 1945. After the foundation of the GDR the village developed like many others. There was the village consumer, a restaurant, kindergarten and crèche and a post office. The school, opened in 1875, was already closed in 1959. The inhabitants worked in the local businesses and institutions, but mainly in agriculture. Until the mid-1950s there were many individual farmers, who later farmed together in agricultural production cooperatives. At the beginning of the 1970-ies some inhabitants also found work in the newly built object of the NVA (National People's Army). The turnaround in 1989 also brought great changes to Blankenburg. The citizens became more mobile, the need for the local public facilities was no longer given, these closed gradually. The army building was no longer needed after it was taken over by the Bundeswehr. It was first used as a home for asylum seekers and later partly demolished. Already in 1991 Blankenburg belonged to the founding communities of the administrative community Bad Tennstedt. In March 2011 Blankenburg founded the "Stiftung Landleben" together with the neighbouring communities Kirchheilingen, Sundhausen and Tottleben. Together they are working on concepts with the aim of making life in our rural region more attractive for all inhabitants and counteracting the demographic development. This includes attractive offers in services and supply, in the health sector, but also an improvement of leisure activities and a well developed and signposted network of cycle paths and hiking trails for residents and guests. Blankenburg is now a modern residential village with attractive houses, modern street lighting, new roads and pavements and fast internet. The small reservoir on the eastern edge of the village, located directly on the country road and formerly built as a sprinkling basin, is now a fishing pond and hiking destination. A simple small farmer's church in an ensemble with a weeping ash tree and the one-class village school from 1875 as well as the historic community bakery in the centre of the village are listed buildings. The VIA ROMEA, a pilgrimage path on which Abbot Albert von Stade walked to Rome in 1236, leads directly along here. Clubs and organisations, such as the voluntary fire brigade, fire brigade association, baking house friends, etc., shape the social and cultural life in the village and cultivate tradition and customs.
