Situated on a rocky outcrop high above the town of Gräfenthal, the castle was built in the 13th century by the Counts of Orlamünde. Later it came into the possession of the imperial marshals of Pappenheim, who expanded it into a stately castle in the 16th century.
Martin Luther preached in the castle chapel on 13 April 1530. An exhibition about Luther, Melanchton and other guests in the course of the Reformation is in preparation.
By appointment, the lord of the castle personally guides visitors through the museum on the history of the castle, archaeological excavations, as well as traditional costumes and handicrafts in grandma's time. The castle has its own beer garden, a castle restaurant and a guesthouse with double rooms and holiday apartments. As a special highlight, you can ride a trolley on the disused Max and Moritz railway line near the castle. The castle chapel is available for wedding ceremonies.
