The imposing silhouette of the Allstedt castle and palace complex, built by the Oberland master builder Gottfried Heinrich Krohne among others, rises up on the southern Harz. With its unique history of construction and use and as an authentic place of activity of the reformer Thomas Müntzer, it is a place of outstanding importance. An important imperial palace was located here from 935 to 1200. In 1524, the reformer Thomas Müntzer held his famous princely sermon in the Hofstube. The main attraction of the complex, some of whose defensive facilities are still in working order, is the late Gothic castle kitchen with one of the largest chimney stacks in European castle construction. In the 18th century, Goethe stayed at Allstedt Castle and wrote parts of "Iphigenia" here, as can be seen in the Goethe exhibition at the castle museum. The museum is housed in the main castle. After a long period of closure for renovation work, selected areas of the core castle of Allstedt Palace are open again.
