Zoppoten, eingebettet in weitläufige, landwirtschaftliche Flächen und Wälder liegt 550 m über NN und zählt 315 Einwohner. Erstmals wurde der Ort 1211 urkundlich erwähnt. Das kleine Dorf entwickelte sich um die beiden Güter Ober- und Unterzoppoten. Gepflegte Fachwerkhäuser in der Dorfstraße zeugen noch vom bäuerlichen Charakter des Ortes. Ehemals führte durch den Ort die alte Handelsstraße von Nürnberg nach Leipzig. Heute verläuft die Landstraße L 1095 am Ort vorbei und Zoppoten bleibt vom Verkehrslärm verschont. Der besondere Reiz von Zoppoten liegt in seiner Nähe zum Stausee. In wenigen Minuten wandert man durch ein reizvolles Mühlental oder über bewaldete Berghänge zu den Ufern der Bleilochtalsperre. Wundervolle Blicke bieten sich dem Wanderer von einem steil aus dem Wasser aufragenden Felspfeiler, dem Totenfels. Weitere Aussichtspunkte wie Luchsleite, Luchsloch und Blaupunkt sind durch ein gut ausgeschildertes Wandernetz zu erreichen. So führen auch der internationale Wanderweg Eisenach-Budapest und der Saale-Orla-Wanderweg durch Zoppoten. Den Gästen stehen schöne Ferienwohnungen im Ort zur Verfügung. Seit Anfang der 50-er Jahre entstand an der Zoppotener Bucht des Bleilochstausees ein Erholungsgebiet mit über 200 Wochenendhäuschen. Für ein kulturelles und sportliches Angebot sorgen heute rührige Vereine des Ortes.

The small village developed around the two estates of Oberzoppoten and Unterzoppoten. Well-kept half-timbered houses in the village street still bear witness to the rural character of the village. The old trade route from Nuremberg to Leipzig used to pass through the village. Today, the L 1095 road runs past the village and Zoppoten is spared from traffic noise. The special charm of Zoppoten lies in its proximity to the reservoir. In just a few minutes, you can hike through a charming mill valley or across wooded mountain slopes to the shores of the Bleilochtalsperre reservoir. Hikers can enjoy wonderful views from a rock pillar rising steeply out of the water, the Totenfels. Other vantage points such as Luchsleite, Luchsloch, and Blaupunkt can be reached via a well-signposted network of hiking trails. The international Eisenach-Budapest hiking trail and the Saale-Orla hiking trail also pass through Zoppoten. Beautiful vacation apartments are available for guests in the village. Since the early 1950s, a recreation area with over 200 weekend cottages has been developed on the Zoppoten Bay of the Bleiloch Reservoir. Today, active local clubs provide cultural and sporting activities.

Aujourd'hui, la route départementale L 1095 contourne le village et Zoppoten est épargné par le bruit de la circulation. Le charme particulier de Zoppoten réside dans sa proximité avec le lac artificiel. En quelques minutes, on peut se promener à travers une charmante vallée de moulins ou sur des versants boisés jusqu'aux rives du lac artificiel de Bleiloch. Le Totenfels, un pilier rocheux qui s'élève abruptement au-dessus de l'eau, offre aux randonneurs une vue magnifique. D'autres points de vue, tels que Luchsleite, Luchsloch et Blaupunkt, sont accessibles grâce à un réseau de sentiers de randonnée bien balisé. Le sentier international Eisenach-Budapest et le sentier Saale-Orla traversent également Zoppoten. De beaux appartements de vacances sont à la disposition des visiteurs dans la localité.
