It is one of the most beautiful starting points for exploring Weimar's bustling old town: Theaterplatz. The city's most famous landmark is enthroned in the middle - the bronze double statue of Goethe and Schiller designed by Ernst Rietschel. The late classicist monument is flanked by the former widow's residence of Duchess Anna Amalia, the House of the Weimar Republic, the German National Theatre in Weimar, the Goethe department store and numerous restaurants. The Frauenplan with Goethe's house, the Herderplatz with the city church St. Peter and Paul as well as the park at the Ilm are within a few minutes walking distance.
