Jahrhundert widerspiegelt.
The Baroque Wittumspalais is situated in downtown Weimar at Theaterplatz. With its private and representative rooms, the Duchess’ dowager residence is a stunning example of aristocratic domestic culture in Weimar at the end of the 18th century. The mansion had originally belonged to the Weimar minister Baron von Fritsch, who built it from 1767 to 1769. Duchess Anna Amalia of Saxony-Weimar and Eisenach purchased the villa in 1774 after a devastating fire rendered the residence castle uninhabitable. The ornate Round Table Room became a popular meeting place for social gatherings among Weimar’s illustrious figures. For a time, Johann Wolfgang Goethe held his “Friday Socials” in the parlour rooms of the Wittumspalais. After the Duchess’ death, the building was converted into a guesthouse and was temporarily leased to the Mason Lodge “Anna Amalia of the Three Roses”. It was also where the first Thuringian parliament convened and where a reading museum was housed from 1848 to 1860. The Wittumspalais is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Classical Weimar” ensemble. As a unique example of Weimar Classicism, it reflects Weimar’s outstanding role as one of Europe’s intellectual centres in the late 18th and early 19th century.
