Über eine 70-stufige Freitreppe gelangt man vom Domplatz auf den Domberg mit seinen beiden ehemaligen Stiftskirchen. Der Dom mit hochgotischem Chor, romanischem Turmbereich und spätgotischer Westhalle ist Nachfolger des 724 von Rom veranlassten Sakralbaus. Er war die Hauptkirche des 742 von Bischof Bonifatius gegründeten Bistums Erfurt. Im Innenraum sind die gotischen Chorfenster, das umfängliche Chorgestühl (14. Jhd.) sowie die romanischen Skulpturen einer thronenden Madonna und eines monumentalen Kerzenträgers besonders sehenswert. Im mittleren Turm befindet sich die weltweit größte mittelalterliche freischwingende Glocke, die "Gloriosa".

A 70-step flight of steps leads from the cathedral square to the cathedral hill with its two former collegiate churches. The cathedral with its high Gothic choir, Romanesque tower area and late Gothic west hall is the successor to the sacred building commissioned by Rome in 724. It was the main church of the diocese of Erfurt, founded by Bishop Boniface in 742. Inside, the Gothic choir windows, the extensive choir stalls (14th century) and the Romanesque sculptures of an enthroned Madonna and a monumental candle bearer are particularly worth seeing. Un escalier extérieur de 70 marches permet d'accéder de la place de la cathédrale à la colline de la cathédrale avec ses deux anciennes églises collégiales. La cathédrale, avec son chœur de style gothique flamboyant, sa tour romane et son hall ouest de style gothique tardif, a succédé à l'édifice religieux ordonné par Rome en 724. Elle était l'église principale de l'évêché d'Erfurt, fondé en 742 par l'évêque Bonifatius.
