Startpunkt für den Zuweg ist das Naherholungsgebiet Schwanenteich in Mühlhausen.
Die Kreisstadt Mühlhausen liegt an den Ufern der Unstrut, malerisch eingebettet zwischen dem Eichsfeld, dem Dün und dem Hainich. 35 800 Einwohner sind in dieser geschichtsträchtigen Stadt zu Hause. Erwähnt wurde sie erstmals 967 in einer Urkunde Ottos II. Im Jahr 1256 zerstörten die Mühlhäuser die Pfalzburg. Bis zum Jahre 1802 genoss Mühlhausen den Status einer Freien Reichsstadt.
Während des Bauernkrieges 1524/25 befand sich in der Stadt das Hauptquartier des Reformators und Bauernführers Thomas Müntzer. Dieser Zeit verdankt Mühlhausen den Namen "Thomas-Müntzer-Stadt", der allerdings wieder abgelegt wurde. Auf die Ereignisse des Bauernkriegs verweist die Gedenktstätte "Deutscher Bauernkrieg" in der Kornmarktkirche.
Auf Grund seiner 2700 m langen und gut erhaltenen Stadtmauer wird Mühlhausen auch gern als "Rothenburg Thüringens" bezeichnet. Der Wehrgang ist begehbar, der Wehrturm kann bestiegen werden. Neben zahlreichen profanen historischen Gebäuden sind 14 Kirchen und Kapellen bis heute erhalten geblieben. Nach größe und architektonischem Wert sind besonders die dreitürmige Marienkirche sowie die Divii Blasiikirche erwähnenswert.
Seit 1877 wird jährlich im August die größte Stadtkirmes Thüringens gefeiert, wobei der traditionelle Kirmesumzug tausende Besucher aus nah und fern anlockt.
Vom Startpunkt aus am Schwanenteich laufen Sie nach Westen Richtung Schwanenteichallee und folgen dieser für ca. 800 m. Sie erreichen die Popperöder Quelle welche einst 1199 durch ein Erdbeben entstand. Die eindrucksvolle Karstquelle am östlichen Fuße des Hainichs ist eingefasst von einem steinernen Amphietheater und dem fünftürmigen Brunnenhaus von 1614. Beliebt bei den Mühlhäusern und seinen Besuchern ist das alljährlich stattfindende Brunnenfest. Anschließend überqueren Sie den Quellenweg und wandern entlang der Waldstraße in Richtung Waldcafé Prinzenhaus. Überqueren Sie die Straße Am Stadtwald und folgen dem Barbarossaweg (Markierung X8) bis zur Waldgaststätte Weißes Haus. Nach einer kleinen Stärkung in der Waldgaststätte folgen Sie der Streckenbeschreibung der 2. Etappe des Hainichlandweges nach Struth. |

During the Peasants' War of 1524/25, the city was the headquarters of the reformer and peasant leader Thomas Müntzer. Mühlhausen owes it the name "Thomas-Müntzer City", which was later dropped. The memorial "German Peasants' War" in the Kornmarktkirche refers to the events of the Peasants' War.
Due to its 2,700 m long and well-preserved city wall, Mühlhausen is also affectionately called "Rothenburg of Thuringia." The battlement walkway is accessible, and the watchtower can be climbed. Besides numerous secular historical buildings, 14 churches and chapels have been preserved to this day. Notable for their size and architectural value are especially the three-towered Marienkirche and the Divii Blasiikirche.
Since 1877, the largest city fair in Thuringia has been celebrated annually in August, with the traditional fair parade attracting thousands of visitors from near and far.
