Erwähnt wurde sie erstmals 967 in einer Urkunde Ottos II. Im Jahr 1256 zerstörten die Mühlhäuser die Pfalzburg. Bis zum Jahre 1802 genoss Mühlhausen den Status einer Freien Reichsstadt. Während des Bauernkrieges 1524/25 befand sich in der Stadt das Hauptquartier des Reformators und Bauernführers Thomas Müntzer. Dieser Zeit verdankt Mühlhausen den Namen "Thomas-Müntzer-Stadt", der allerdings wieder abgelegt wurde. In terms of size and architectural value, the three-towered Marienkirche and the Divii Blasiikirche are particularly worthy of mention.</p> <p>Since 1877, the largest town fair in Thuringia has been celebrated every year in August, with the traditional fair parade attracting thousands of visitors from near and far.</p> <p>From the starting point at the Schwanenteich pond, walk west in the direction of Schwanenteichallee and follow this for about 800 metres. You will reach the Popperode spring, which was once created by an earthquake in 1199. The impressive karst spring at the eastern foot of the Hainich is surrounded by a stone amphitheatre and the five-towered well house dating from 1614. The annual well festival is popular with the people of Mühlhausen and its visitors. Then cross the Quellenweg and walk along Waldstraße in the direction of the Waldcafé Prinzenhaus. Cross the street Am Stadtwald and follow the Barbarossaweg (marking X8) to the forest restaurant Weißes Haus. After a snack in the forest restaurant, follow the route description of the 2nd stage of the Hainichland Trail to Struth.</p>
