Visible from afar, they tower over the Goldene Aue - the white walls of Heringen Castle of the Counts of Hohnstein from the 14th century. The recognized cultural monument of national importance has been extensively renovated in recent years. The walls are around 700 years old and extend over five floors with a height of around 34 meters. The fabric of the building has remained largely intact. While the town was exposed to several serious fires, the castle was spared. Countess Clara von Schwarzburg-Frankenhausen, daughter of the Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, is the castle's most famous resident. From 1598 to 1658, she held the office and Heringen Castle as her widow's residence. Her husband Count Wilhelm I von Schwarzburg-Frankenhausen died after a short marriage. The history of the castle began between 1322 and 1327, when the Counts of Hohnstein built a Romanesque castle in Heringen - known as "hohes Huß". The town of Heringen was founded in the early Middle Ages. During this time, Heringen was also granted town privileges by the Counts of Hohnstein, which was followed by the fortification of the town. At the beginning of the 16th century, extensive renovations turned the castle into a Renaissance-style palace. History is exhibited and brought to life in the castle's Great Hall. Another highlight is the permanent archaeological exhibition "The oldest village in Thuringia", which opened in May 2019. Extensive excavations show that the Goldene Aue was already inhabited in the Neolithic period almost 7,500 years ago. This period marks one of the most important cultural-historical changes in the history of mankind. The castle also houses historical objects such as a corner store, furniture and home accessories from the 1930s onwards, a country outpatient clinic and changing special exhibitions featuring regional artists. The museum café is open from Thursday to Sunday from 14:00 - 18:00 and by individual arrangement.
