L'origine de cet imposant bâtiment remonte au début du 17ème siècle. Suite à un privilège du duc Johann Ernst de Saxe-Saalfeld, il fut ensuite élevé au rang de Freihof, ce qui le dispensa d'impôts et de cantonnements. Dans la première moitié du 18ème siècle, il abritait une fabrique de trèfles en or et en argent. L'entourage du duc avait toujours besoin de nouvelles décorations pour ses uniformes. Le Cerf rouge s'est établi vers 1850. Le chocolatier Ernst Hüther de Saalfeld a acheté le bâtiment lors d'une vente forcée au prix fort de 110 000 marks. En 1919, il a ordonné les travaux de transformation en un hôtel haut de gamme. Il disposait d'une brasserie, d'une cave à vin et d'une pâtisserie. La façade du marché du bâtiment a été conservée dans son essence, seul un balcon de l'Annonciation a été ajouté au-dessus du portail. Le groupe de personnages en grès à l'entrée de l'office de tourisme n'est pas courant. Le maître d'ouvrage, l'architecte, le chef de chantier et le peintre y ont été immortalisés. D'ailleurs, l'architecte Max Hans Kühne a joué un rôle déterminant dans la construction de la gare centrale de Leipzig. Aujourd'hui, le bâtiment abrite une partie de la mairie de la municipalité et l'office de tourisme.

The origin of the imposing building can be traced back to the beginning of the 17th century. According to a privilege of Duke Johann Ernst of Saxony-Saalfeld, it was later elevated to the status of a free court and thus exempt from taxes and quartering. In the first half of the 18th century, a gold and silver braid factory was located here. The duke's retinue always needed new decorations for their uniforms. The Red Stag established itself around 1850. The Saalfeld chocolate manufacturer Ernst Hüther acquired the building at a forced auction for the highest price of 110,000 marks. In 1919, he arranged for the building to be converted into an upscale hotel. It had a beer hall, wine cellar and confectionery. The core of the building's market façade was preserved, only an Annunciation balcony was added above the portal. The group of figures made of sandstone at the entrance of the tourist information is not common. Here the builder, architect, site manager and painter have immortalized themselves. Incidentally, the architect Max Hans Kühne was significantly involved in the construction of Leipzig's main train station. Today, the house houses part of the city council's town hall and the tourist information office.
