Die durch den freiwilligen Zusammenschluss der Gemeinden Gräfenroda, Geraberg, Geschwenda, Gossel, Liebenstein und Frankenhain gebildete Gemeinde Geratal wurde mit dem Thüringer Gesetz zur freiwilligen Neugliederung kreisangehöriger Gemeinden im Jahr 2019 (ThürGNGG 2019) vom 18. Dezember 2018 § 12 genehmigt. Die damit ab dem 01.01.2019 neu gebildete Gemeinde Geratal gehört zum Ilm-Kreis des Freistaates Thüringen. Kreissitz ist die Stadt Arnstadt. Das Gebiet der Gemeinde bietet im Herzen Thüringens viele bewaldete Berge und Täler. Gräfenroda, am Nordosthang des Thüringer Waldes gelegen, wird ebenso wie Liebenstein - kleinster Ortsteil unserer Gemeinde - von der wilden Gera durchflossen. Die Orte Geraberg und Geschwenda sind umgeben von unberührter Natur, Felder und Wiesen mit einer Vielzahl unter Naturschutz stehender Pflanzen. Geraberg liegt an der zahmen Gera. Gossel ist ein traditionsreicher und industriefreier Ort, welcher auf einem Muschelkalkplateau steht und somit schon von weitem sichtbar ist. Frankenhain liegt in einem Talkessel und bleibt dadurch von den rauen Nord-und Ostwinden verschont.

Au cœur de la Thuringe, le territoire de la commune offre de nombreuses montagnes et vallées boisées. Gräfenroda, située sur le versant nord-est de la forêt de Thuringe, est traversée par la rivière sauvage Gera, tout comme Liebenstein - le plus petit quartier de notre commune. Les villages de Geraberg et Geschwenda sont entourés d'une nature intacte, de champs et de prairies abritant une multitude de plantes protégées. Geraberg se trouve sur la Gera apprivoisée. Gossel est un village riche en traditions et sans industrie, situé sur un plateau de calcaire coquillier et donc visible de loin.
