This idyllic town lies on the middle reaches of the White Elster near Gera. Bad Köstritz is called the small town with the many big "B's" - they stand for bath, beer, flowers and baroque music. For centuries, the beer tradition has played a major role in the town's fame. In 1506 the brewing right is mentioned in a document and 1543 is considered to be the founding year of the brewing trade. The Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei, which is also one of the most important breweries in Germany, is responsible for today's reputation. For the real connoisseurs and all those interested, tours of the brewery are offered, where they can experience all the processes of beer production up close and of course taste the final result. In addition, Bad Köstritz maintains its proud history of market gardening and fruit growing. One of the greatest figures in this field was Christian Deegen - an important father of German dahlia cultivation, from whose nurseries dahlias, roses and woody plants were even shipped overseas. The Dahlia Centre today offers a magical atmosphere with its garden, where the wonderful colours and fine flower fragrances flow together. With Heinrich Schütz Bad Köstritz has produced its most famous son. He was the most important German composer before Johann Sebastian Bach. His birthplace attracts many visitors to its old walls every year. And in honour of his 400th birthday, a modernly designed Heinrich Schütz monument was inaugurated in the centre of the town in 1985. The former castle park is ideal for a leisurely stroll. One of the most beautiful architectures there, is the small Ionic classicist temple. A white statue of the Greek goddess Demeter stands in the middle of the circular columned building. On the one hand, she is a symbol of the joy of life, and on the other hand, she embodies the agricultural and horticultural traditions of Bad Köstritz.
