In the outer east of Thuringia, in the idyllic Sprotte valley, lies the town of Schmölln, which was first mentioned in a document in 1066 under the name "zmulna".
Our button and regional museum offers a variety of information on the development of the Schmölln button industry, which for decades was formative for the town's history. In 1867 the brothers Hermann and Valentin Donath started the production of stone nut buttons. By the turn of the 20th century, 29 button factories had been established. Schmölln advanced to the "button city" with worldwide sales markets. The exhibition shows photographs and documents, raw materials for button production, equipment and historical machines - and of course lots of buttons. In the regional history section, there are interesting facts to discover about the history of the town, the comb and brush industry, Altenburg farm life and the famous Schmöllner Mutzbraten.
The museum is located directly on the Thuringian Town Chain, Thuringian Trail, Luther Trail and the Water Adventure Trail from Schmölln to Posterstein.
