Les fermes de Thuringe sont considérées comme le plus ancien musée en plein air d'Allemagne. Cependant, le parc Heinrich Heine de Rudolstadt n'est pas le site d'origine du complexe de fermes composé de plusieurs bâtiments. En 1914/1915, les deux maisons, la Unterhaseler Haus et la Birkenheider Haus, ont été retirées de leur emplacement d'origine et reconstruites ici. Les citoyens de Rudolstadt, proches de leur patrie, ont sauvé les bâtiments à colombages d'une démolition imminente. Malgré la Première Guerre mondiale, la reconstruction et l'aménagement ont été achevés en un peu plus d'un an, de sorte que le musée a pu être inauguré solennellement en mai 1915.
En 1939, le musée a été repris par la ville de Rudolstadt. En 1964, il est devenu une branche des musées d'État de Heidecksburg Rudolstadt. Depuis 2006, l'installation est à nouveau gérée par la ville de Rudolstadt, tandis que l'inventaire appartient au musée d'État de Thuringe, Heidecksburg.
Les produits de l'art populaire, magnifiquement façonnés et colorés, forment un contraste apparent avec le faible statut social de la population paysanne. Cet art, qui a atteint son apogée au début du XIXe siècle et qui se manifeste par l'unité de la décoration intérieure et de l'architecture, était destiné à former un contrepoint à leur position sociale défavorisée. Il ne s'agit pas d'un art exclusivement orienté vers la représentation, comme c'est le cas pour la noblesse et la bourgeoisie, mais l'art paysan est presque sans exception un art appliqué, l'aspect pratique allié à la beauté des formes.

The Thuringian farmhouses are considered the oldest open-air museum in Germany. However, the Heinrich-Heine-Park in Rudolstadt is not the original location of the farm complex consisting of several buildings. In 1914/1915, the two houses, the Unterhaseler Haus and the Birkenheider Haus, were removed from their original locations and rebuilt here. Citizens of Rudolstadt who were close to their homeland saved the half-timbered buildings from imminent demolition. They found support in the "Marie Richter Foundation", which goes back to the Richter family, owners of the "Richters Anker-Steinbaukästen" production plant in Rudolstadt. They not only contributed to the industrial upswing in Rudolstadt, but were also involved in cultural and social projects. After the houses had been moved, voluntary citizens of the "Association for Rudolstadt History and Heritage Protection" took over the furnishing of the houses with rural furniture, household and work tools as well as products of textile folk art, which were collected in the surroundings of Rudolstadt. Over the years, more than 1000 individual pieces were collected, from spoons to cradles, from potato graters to looms. Despite the First World War, the reconstruction and the furnishing could be implemented in just over a year, so that the museum could be ceremoniously opened in May 1915.
In 1939 the museum was taken over by the city of Rudolstadt. In 1964 it became a branch of the State Museums Heidecksburg Rudolstadt. Since 2006, the facility has once again been operated by the city of Rudolstadt, while the inventory belongs to the Thuringian State Museum Heidecksburg.
The beautifully shaped and colourful products of folk art form an apparent contrast to the low social status of the peasant population. This art, which reached its peak at the turn of the 19th century and can be seen in its unity of interior decoration and architecture, was intended to form a counterpoint to their poor social position. It is not an art which, as with the nobility and the bourgeoisie, is geared exclusively to representation, but peasant art is almost without exception applied art, practicality combined with beauty of form.

Museum für Lokalgeschichte in Rudolstadt
Die Thüringer Bauernhäuser gelten als das älteste Freilichtmuseum Deutschlands. Der Heinrich-Heine-Park in Rudolstadt ist allerdings nicht der ursprüngliche Standort der aus mehreren Gebäuden bestehenden Hofanlage. In den Jahren 1914/1915 wurden die beiden Häuser, das Unterhaseler und das Birkenheider Haus, an ihren ursprünglichen Orten abgetragen und hier wiederaufgebaut. Heimatverbundene Bürger Rudolstadts retteten die Fachwerkbauten vor dem drohenden Abriss. Unterstützung fanden sie in der „Marie-Richter-Stiftung“, die auf die Familie Richter, Inhaber der Produktionsstätte „Richters Anker-Steinbaukästen“ in Rudolstadt, zurückgeht. Sie trugen nicht nur zum industriellen Aufschwung in Rudolstadt bei, sondern engagierten sich ebenso in kulturellen und sozialen Projekten. Nach der Umsetzung der Häuser übernahmen ehrenamtlich tätige Bürger des „Vereins für Rudolstädter Geschichte und Heimatschutz“ die Ausstattung der Häuser mit bäuerlichem Mobiliar, Haus- und Arbeitsgeräten sowie Erzeugnissen der textilen Volkskunst, die in der Umgebung Rudolstadts gesammelt wurden. Im Laufe der Jahre kamen so über 1000 Einzelstücke zusammen, vom Löffel bis zur Kinderwiege, von der Kartoffelreibe bis zum Webstuhl. Trotz des Ersten Weltkrieges konnte der Wiederaufbau und die Einrichtung in nur gut einem Jahr umgesetzt werden, sodass im Mai 1915 das Museum feierlich eröffnet werden konnte. 1939 wurde das Museum von der Stadt Rudolstadt übernommen. 1964 erfolgte der Anschluss als Außenstelle an die Staatlichen Museen Heidecksburg Rudolstadt. Seit 2006 wird die Anlage wieder durch die Stadt Rudolstadt betrieben, während das Inventar dem Thüringer Landesmuseum Heidecksburg zugehörig ist. Die formschönen und farbenfreudigen Produkte der Volkskunst bilden einen scheinbaren Gegensatz zur niederen sozialen Stellung der bäuerlichen Bevölkerung. Diese Kunst, die ihren Höhepunkt an der Wende zum 19. Jahrhundert erreichte und in ihrer Einheit von Inneneinrichtung und Architektur zu sehen ist, sollte einen Gegenpol zu ihrer schlechten sozialen Lage bilden. Es ist keine Kunst, die wie bei Adel und Bürgertum ausschließlich auf Repräsentation ausgerichtet ist, sondern die bäuerliche Kunst ist fast ausnahmslos angewandte Kunst, Zweckmäßigkeit verbunden mit Formschönheit.
