The Blankenberg castle ruins in Thuringia are a fascinating historical structure that rises above the Saale valley in the Bastei natural monument. Once built as a medieval complex, it was mentioned in documents as early as 1192. The former fortification was later redesigned as a castle at the beginning of the modern era. Rising high on a rocky spur, the castle was dominated by seven massive pillars and separated from the rest of the grounds by a moat that is still visible today. Blankenberg Castle remained virtually unchanged until the end of the Second World War. Unfortunately, the "Old Castle", as it was popularly known, was blown up by the Soviet occupying forces after more than 800 years of history. For a decade now, the castle ruins have been uncovered and restored with the help of the municipality and the state archaeological office. Thanks to these efforts, the Blankenberg castle ruins have developed into a tourist gem in the midst of a beautiful, untouched landscape. Its location made it possible to monitor and control the river and the surrounding areas. The castle originally served as a fortification and later as a residence for the Lords of Blankenberg. Over the centuries, it underwent numerous changes of ownership and structural alterations. The history of the castle is just as fascinating as its architecture. It was built in the 12th century by the Lords of Blankenberg and changed hands several times over the course of time. In the 17th century, it was taken over by the Counts of Schwarzburg and later by the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. During the Second World War, the castle was blown up by the Soviet occupying forces, which led to its current state. Restoration of the castle ruins began in the 1990s. The municipality of Blankenberg and the Thuringian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments are working together to secure the remains and make them accessible to the public.
