The municipality of Rosenthal am Rennsteig is located southeast of the state border with Bavaria in the nature park "Thuringian Slate Mountains/Upper Saale". The area is characterized by the mountains and valleys of the Thuringian and Franconian Forest and the "Thuringian Sea", the Bleiloch Reservoir. The municipality of Rosenthal am Rennsteig includes the districts of Arlas, Birkenhügel, Blankenberg, Blankenstein, Harra, Lemnitzhammer, Kießling, Neundorf, Pottiga, Schlegel and Seibis. In GDR times the communities were part of the border area in the district of Lobenstein or bordered directly on it. Due to the neighbourhood of the villages, there have always been close professional, kinship and also friendly relations. The local chronicles report about different interweavings of this kind back to the Middle Ages. Blankenstein is known as the starting and end point of the 168.3 km long " Rennsteig", one of the most important European long-distance hiking trails. The trail spider near Kießling lives up to its name and presents the hiker with a choice of different paths through the region. The local history museum in neighbouring Harra offers its visitors a showcase into the bourgeois life of the last centuries. The ruins of the "Old Castle" are enthroned in Blankenberg. These are the remains of a castle that once overlooked the region. A good view can also be enjoyed from the viewing platform in Pottiga. Here the visitor can let his gaze wander over the Saale valley. In the neighbouring Birkenhügel, the Waldfels offers a clear view as far as Franconia. The Marienberg in Seibis, in the direct vicinity of the Rennsteig, is just as worth a trip as the over 400 year old apple tree in Schlegel. Anglers get their money's worth at the waters near Lemnitzhammer. An old trade route between Nuremberg and Leipzig once led through Neundorf. Later it carried Napoleon's troops. Arlas is also surrounded by the breath of history. Here there was once a pilgrimage church dedicated to St. Mary. Even this first selection of excursion destinations allows the guest in Rosenthal to experience the beauty of nature and enjoy the romance of discovering largely untouched nature. More than 15,000 cyclists and hikers come to the municipal area every year via the premium hiking trails Rennsteig, Kammweg, Frankenweg and Fränkischer Gebirgsweg or they start their rides and hikes here.
