In 1071, a Benedictine monastery was built on the site of today’s castle. As early as 1700, a chronicle mentions the Baroque pleasure garden. A unique feature in the 19th century was that the castle garden was “open to everyone for leisurely strolls.” Duke Johann Ernst of Saxe-Saalfeld took up residence in Saalfeld from 1680 until his death in 1745. In the partition of the state in 1826, the castle and its garden passed to the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen and remained under its sovereignty until 1918. Also worth seeing is the Baroque palace chapel in the former Saalfeld residential palace. With its rich sculptural and pictorial decoration, it ranks among the most accomplished examples of Protestant Baroque church architecture in Thuringia. The magnificent ceiling painting, like the frescoes on the walls, is by Carlo Ludovico Castelli. Today, the palace chapel is used for concerts and as a prestigious event venue. Today, Saalfeld Castle serves as the administrative headquarters of the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district and is open to visitors during regular hours.
