Between 1102 and 1105, Paulina, a Thuringian-Saxon noblewoman, founded a Benedictine monastery in Paulinzella, consisting of a few wooden huts and a small chapel. Construction of the current monastery complex began in 1105/1106 and was completed around the middle of the 12th century. During the Peasants' War, the monastery lost all its possessions and, with the introduction of the Reformation in the County of Schwarzburg, became subject to secular regulations. After the Benedictine monastery was dissolved in 1534 and the monks were expelled, eight years later the estates passed into the possession of Count Günther XL of Schwarzburg. Subsequently, the entire monastery complex gradually fell into ruin, as the stones of the ruins were used, among other things, for building purposes. Nevertheless, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was deeply impressed by the picturesque remains of the ruined monastery. At that time, as he noted, "it was not yet the fashion to consider these ecclesiastical ruins as highly significant and venerable." However, since he was "praised for the magnificent sight," Goethe spent his 68th birthday here. The ruins of the monastery church today belong to the most important Romanesque buildings in Germany and are a hidden gem for all lovers of Romanesque architecture. Crossing the Rennsteig, Germany's best-known hiking trail, the route goes up to the ridge of the Thuringian Forest and on to Frauenwald. Situated directly on the important trade route between Erfurt and Nuremberg, which was part of the long-distance road between Denmark and Italy, the crossing of the Rennsteig at Frauenwald was considered the main route due to the long and gentle ascents. Luther took the route to Rome via Frauenwald eleven times. Twice he is said to have spent the night at a nearby monastery.

La ruine de l'église abbatiale est aujourd'hui l'un des édifices romans les plus importants d'Allemagne et constitue une recommandation secrète pour tous les amateurs d'architecture romane. En traversant le Rennsteig, le sentier de randonnée le plus célèbre d'Allemagne, on monte jusqu'à la crête de la forêt de Thuringe et jusqu'à Frauenwald. Situé directement sur une importante voie commerciale entre Erfurt et Nuremberg, elle-même une section de la route longue distance entre le Danemark et l'Italie, le passage du Rennsteig à Frauenwald était considéré comme la route principale en raison des longues et douces montées. Luther a emprunté onze fois cet itinéraire vers Rome via Frauenwald. Deux fois, il aurait passé la nuit dans un monastère proche.

Zwischen 1102 und 1105 gründete Paulina, eine thüringisch - sächsische Adlige, in Paulinzella ein Benediktinerkloster, das aus wenigen Holzhütten und einer kleinen Kapelle bestand. 1105/1106 begann der Bau des jetzigen Klosterkomplexes, der gegen Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts fertig gestellt wurde. Während des Bauernkrieges verlor das Kloster sämtliche Besitztümer und unterlag mit Einführung der Reformation in der Grafschaft Schwarzburg nun weltlichen Bestimmungen. Nachdem das Benediktinerkloster 1534 aufgehoben und die Mönche vertrieben waren, gingen acht Jahre später die Güter in den Besitz des Grafen Günther XL. von Schwarzburg über. Danach begann der allmähliche Verfall der gesamten Klosteranlage, da die Steine der Ruine unter anderem für Bauzwecke genutzt wurden. Dennoch war Johann Wolfgang von Goethe tief beeindruckt von den malerischen Resten der verfallenen Klosteranlage. Schließlich war es zu jener Zeit, wie bei ihm nachzulesen ist, "noch nicht Mode, diese kirchlichen Ruinen als höchstbedeutend und ehrwürdig zu betrachten." Da man ihm jedoch "den großartigen Anblick rühmte", verbrachte Goethe hier seinen 68. Geburtstag. Die Ruine der Klosterkirche gehört heute zu den bedeutendsten romanischen Bauwerken in Deutschland und ist ein Geheimtipp für alle Liebhaber der romanischen Architektur. Mit Querung des Rennsteigs, des bekanntesten Wanderweges Deutschlands, geht es hinauf auf den Kamm des Thüringer Waldes und nach Frauenwald. Unmittelbar am bedeutenden Handelsweg zwischen Erfurt und Nürnberg gelegen, der wiederum ein Abschnitt der Fernstraße zwischen Dänemark und Italien war, galt hier in Frauenwald die Querung des Rennsteigs wegen der langen und sanften Steigungen als Hauptroute. Elf Mal nahm Luther die Strecke nach Rom über Frauenwald.  Zwei Mal soll er in einem nahegelegenen Kloster übernachtet haben.
