About: Paulinzella Monastery, Klosterruine Paulinzella, Monastère Paulinzella

For 40 years, as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe noted in his diary in 1817, he had "criss-crossed Thuringia by wagon, horse and foot" and yet had never before been to Paulinzella. Yet the monastery ruins in the Rottenbach Valley were already a worthwhile destination in Goethe's day. After all, Paulinzella Monastery is one of the most important Romanesque sacred buildings in Central Germany. The monastery church dates back to the 12th century but is only preserved in ruins. The former administrative building and the hunting lodge of the Counts of Schwarzburg house a museum on the history of the monastery and forestry.

Dabei war die Klosterruine im Rottenbachtal schon zu Goethes Zeiten ein lohnendes Ziel. Immerhin gehört Kloster Paulinzella zu den bedeutendsten romanischen Sakralbauten Mitteldeutschlands. Die Klosterkirche stammt aus dem 12. Jahrhundert, ist aber nur noch als Ruine erhalten. Das frühere Amtshaus sowie das Jagdschloss der Grafen von Schwarzburg beherbergen ein Museum zur Kloster- und Forstgeschichte.
