Embark on a historical short visit and experience numerous highlights. Begin your route at the market square in Freyburg. Market Square: Around the square you will find the town hall, hotels, restaurants, and the Freyburg Tourist Association e. V. Previously, a gilded equestrian statue of Duke Christian of Saxony-Weissenfels stood here. The torso of the monument destroyed in 1948 can now be found in the courtyard of Neuenburg Castle. The original location is marked by a metal frame with an inscription, as the market square was redesigned as part of an architectural competition in 2003 under the motto "Tuscany of the North". Town Hall: The foundation stone for the town hall, which rests on Romanesque foundations and vaulted cellars, was laid in 1425. The current appearance is shaped by rebuilds after the city fires of 1551 and 1682, which severely damaged the town hall. St. Mary's Church: The construction of this late Romanesque church, also known as the "sister" of Naumburg Cathedral, dates from 1210 to 1230 and was probably commissioned by the Thuringian Landgrave Ludwig IV (reigned 1217-1227). The church is Romanesque at its core. In the early 15th century, the apse was demolished and replaced by a Gothic choir. The southern side apse was also sacrificed for an adjoining sacristy. At the end of the 15th century, the nave was torn down and replaced by a hall church. Schlifter Vineyard: This vineyard with its historic vineyard cottage is among the steepest terraced vineyards in the region, with a slope inclination of up to 54%. Due to the breathtaking views from the steep slopes, it is a popular photo spot for guests. It also hosts a so-called "celebrity vineyard," where all German and local wine royalty as well as important guests of Freyburg were allowed to plant a vine. Schützenhaus: The first proven document from August 20, 1603, "Rules and Regulations" includes 28 shooting articles. In this year, the 1st Freyburg Shooting Club was founded. In 1659, the shooting guild purchased the meadow "Hinterm Schlag" as a shooting range, where a shooting house already stood. The current Schützenhaus was completely renovated in 1996 and is available to guests as an event venue. To this day, the Freyburg Shooting Club 1603 e. V. uses the cellar shooting range. Jahn Hall of Honor: The building inaugurated in 1903 served as the first Jahn museum and memorial to the German gymnastics festivals. The artistically designed stained glass windows were donated by the cities that hosted the gymnastics festivals. Today, it is a popular venue for festivals, conferences, and clubs. City Fortifications: The still largely preserved city wall once had three city gates (Kirchtor, Obertor, Eckstädter Tor), a gate, and 14 towers and is about 1,200 meters long. The three gates connected the city with its former suburbs/villages. The fortification of the city walls was done step by step in the 14th and 15th centuries. Jahn Memorial Gymnasium: It was built during the German Empire by the German Gymnastics Association (DT) as a tomb for Friedrich Ludwig Jahn and was solemnly inaugurated in 1894 in the presence of 3,000 gymnasts from all over Germany. Later, it was gifted to the city of Freyburg with the condition that it be used exclusively for gymnastics activities. Today, it serves as a training venue for clubs and school sports. Freyburg-Unstrut Winegrowers' Association e.G: On December 28, 1934, a community of Freyburg winegrowers came together to secure grape processing and cellar operations independently. The 27 founding members contributed 31 hectares to the association. Today, there are 400 members managing around 400 hectares of vineyards. Guests receive comprehensive advice about Saale-Unstrut wine in the "Freyburg Wine Gallery." A special highlight is the wine tastings in the ANISIUM, which are crowned with a tour through one of Germany's most beautiful wooden barrel cellars. Rotkäppchen Sparkling Wine Cellar: Since 1856, sparkling wine of perfect quality has been produced here. Today, Rotkäppchen-Mumm Sektkellereien is one of Germany's leading sparkling wine producers. Particularly worth seeing in the historic cellar are the historic light courtyard from around the turn of the century, the five-story cellar complex, and the mighty domed cellar with the largest cuvée wooden barrel in Germany. Eckstädter Gate: The gate with tower and bastion is located in the southwest of the city and connected it to the Eckstädter suburb. The south side of the outer gate is part of a residential house. The Eckstädter Gate itself was built/fortified in 1385 and consisted of an outer gate, an enclosure courtyard, and a main gate next to the tower. The northern part of the enclosure gate (barbican) is still preserved. Napoleon Gate: The gate was located until 1888 in the south of the city wall towards the Unstrut. The gate tower was converted into a residential house. Since Napoleon's passage in 1813, it has been called the "Napoleon Gate," as he is said to have directed the crossing of his troops over the Unstrut from this spot. Burgmühle (Castle Mill): The mill, once belonging to Neuenburg, was established at the end of the 11th century. In 1632, the Saxon Elector Johann Georg commissioned the construction of a new mill building. It was used as a fulling, oil, saw, and grain mill. At the end of the 19th century, turbines were installed for electricity generation. Since 2015, electricity from hydropower has again been generated here. In the restaurant, you can enjoy delicious food and wines from Saale-Unstrut. Herzoglicher Vineyard: The terraced vineyard located below Neuenburg Castle, with its distinctive Rococo vineyard house, is a landmark of the region. Its current form represents a baroque vineyard garden, as it appeared at the end of the 18th century. Neuenburg Castle: The castle was founded around 1090 by the Thuringian count "Ludwig the Springer" and magnificently expanded in the 12th/13th centuries under the Landgraves of Thuringia. The architectural highlight is the Romanesque double chapel. During the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the castle served as a hunting lodge for Saxon princes. Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Museum: The museum, housed in the residential house of "Turnfather Jahn" since the 1936 Olympic Games, documents the life of the founder of the German gymnastic movement. Jahn, who lived in Freyburg since 1825 (initially in political exile), was buried in the honorary courtyard of the house in 1936. Kirchtor (Church Gate): The southeastern city gate of Freyburg, which linked the city with the church suburb, was demolished in 1861 to build a new schoolhouse with an adjoining staircase. The court cellar and court stairs later received their names from the district court, which was located in the schoolhouse after 1880. Rectory and District Court: The original main building of the rectory dates back to the second quarter of the 16th century. The first recorded rector is Peter Leinewetter in 1555. He occupied an apartment on the upper floor. A boys' school was established on the ground floor, shortly afterward also a "Magtleinschule". In 1834 the boys' school moved to new classrooms in the town hall due to space reasons. Over time, the city needed significantly more space for all the eager children. In 1861, the foundation stone for the new school and the later district court was laid to the right of the boys' school and inaugurated two years later. Less than 20 years later, the district court moved in, and the current Friedrich Ludwig Jahn School was opened. The old rectory served as a residence until the 1980s. Today, the building houses a library.
