The Gottesackerkirche is the oldest ecclesiastical building in Creuzburg. It was located outside the town wall. In the 11th century Marienkirche, in the 13th century parish church of the old Creuzburg place of worship of the Augustinian nunnery St. Jacob, in the Middle Ages Frauenkirche. After the Reformation it fell into disrepair, and after being renovated in 1621 it burned down completely in 1934. It was not until 1710 that it was rebuilt by the Creuzburg architect Johann Georg Busch, but without the tower and chancel. Until 1981 it was the place of worship of the parish. The cemetery surrounding the church was used until the end of the 19th century. Individual gravestones still remind us of this today.
