The village of Drognitz lies to the south of the Hohenwartestausee. The first documented mention of the Drognitzer Höhe was in 1120 in a deed of donation by Count Wichmann for the new Augustinian Canons' Monastery of Kaltenborn. On a well-signposted network of hiking trails, you can explore the beautiful landscape around the "Thuringian Sea", as well as enjoy fascinating views of the Saale Cascade - St. John's Church from 1701 -.

Drognitz ist eine Gemeinde im Landkreis Saalfeld-Rudolstadt in Thüringen. Erfüllende Gemeinde für Drognitz ist die Gemeinde Kaulsdorf. Das Höhendorf Drognitz liegt südlich des Hohenwarte-Stausees an der alten Salz- und Handelsstraße von Leipzig nach Nürnberg. Erste urkundliche Erwähnung der Drognitzer Höhe war im Jahre 1120 in einer Schenkungsurkunde des Grafen Wichmann für das neue Augustiner-Chorherrenstift Kaltenborn. Die Dorfkirche St. Johannis beeindruckt mit ihrem barocken Kanzelalter mit Pilastern von 1701 und dem gotischen Taufstein. Auf einem gut ausgeschilderten Wanderwegenetz kann man die herrliche Landschaft rund um das "Thüringer Meer" erkunden sowie faszinierende Ausblicke auf die Saalekaskade genießen.
