He is one of the most famous artists of the 16th century: Lucas Cranach the Elder. Named after his birthplace Kronach, he stayed in Vienna after training with his father. There he developed into the main representative of the Danube School. He produced important portraits and religious depictions as well as landscape painting. Cranach not only founded a workshop similar to a manufactory but also ran a bookshop and a pharmacy. He decorated churches and castles with paintings for his art-loving employer. He spent the last year of his life in Weimar, where he had followed Duke Johann Friedrich. Although the period of time he spent in the royal seat is short, the legacy he created there surpasses numerous masterpieces. He began work on the altar of the city church, which his son finished. A large quantity of paintings is part of the collection in the Weimar city palace. Cranach's gravesite is in the Jakobskirchhof, the original tombstone in the Stadtkirche.
