Set out on an exploration route – you'll be amazed by the variety of historical witnesses from different centuries you encounter along the way. You start at one of Jena’s oldest houses, the former city warehouse, which now houses the Jena Tourist Information. Pass by the only remaining part of the medieval city wall. The Powder Tower, Johannistor, and Anatomy Tower hint at the city’s former dimensions. Back then, viticulture on the surrounding slopes was the residents' main source of income. But with the founding of the university in 1558, science moved into the small town on the Saale River. About 250 years later, Goethe and Schiller worked in Jena, and in the mid-19th century, Carl Zeiss opened his workshop, transforming the city again. Today, Jena is lively and colorful, with the wonderful surroundings inviting active recreation – a paradise for locals and a hidden gem for guests. Let yourself be surprised.
