The baroque Friedenstein Palace is the impressive testimony to the art of the newly founded Duchy of Saxony-Gotha. Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Gotha had it built. His deeply religious understanding is reflected not only in his epithet "the Pious", but also in the castle name itself. "Peace Ernehret, Unfriede Verzehret" can be read on the main portal. Today, the palace complex houses the palace museum with its art chamber, the Museum of Nature and the Historical Museum as well as the baroque Ekhof Theatre and the palace church. It was Ernst I with the epithet "the Pious" who commissioned the construction of Friedenstein Palace. It was to replace the then already destroyed Grimmenstein Fortress. The foundation stone for the new palace was laid in the autumn of 1643, and barely three years later the duke and his family were able to move into the north wing. The entire complex was finally completed by 1656, although the initial decoration was to take another ten years. Important artists and renowned craftsmen left their mark in Gotha. They ensured that Friedenstein Palace was to be one of the most outstanding pieces of architecture of the 17th century. Hardly any other prince had a comparable residence at that time. The highly symbolic name of the palace is the subject of both the dedication inscription above the main portal and the relief cartouche above it, which shows the "Kiss of Peace". The surrounding saying reflects the understanding of the builder - " Peace Ernehret - Unfriede Verzehret". Inside the chateau, rooms from the Baroque, Rococo, Classicism and Historicism periods have been preserved. Today it houses the castle museum, with the richly stuccoed banqueting hall and the ducal apartments, as well as the Kunstkammer, the Museum of Nature and the Historical Museum. The unique art collections can be seen in the Ducal Museum opposite. In the west tower is the Ekhof Theatre - a baroque theatre bearing the name of Conrad Ekhof (1720-1778). He was considered the "father of German drama" and the director of one of the first theatres with permanent actors. Due to its original wooden stage technology, the theatre is considered one of the most completely preserved of the 17th century and is still in use today.

Le château baroque Friedenstein est le témoignage impressionnant de l'art du duché de Saxe-Gotha nouvellement créé. Le duc Ernst Ier de Sachen-Gotha l'a fait construire. Sa conception profondément religieuse se reflète non seulement dans son surnom "le pieux", mais aussi dans le nom même du château. "Friede Ernehret, Unfriede Verzehret", peut-on lire sur le portail principal. Le complexe du château abrite aujourd'hui le musée du château avec son cabinet de curiosités, le musée de la nature et le musée historique ainsi que le théâtre baroque Ekhof et l'église du château. C'est Ernst Ier, surnommé "le pieux", qui a commandé la construction du château Friedenstein. Il devait remplacer la forteresse de Grimmenstein, déjà détruite à l'époque. La première pierre du nouveau château fut posée à l'automne 1643 et à peine trois ans plus tard, le duc et sa famille pouvaient déjà emménager dans l'aile nord. En 1656, l'ensemble de l'édifice était achevé, même si la première décoration devait durer encore dix ans. D'importants artistes et des artisans renommés laissèrent leur empreinte à Gotha. Ils ont fait en sorte que le château Friedenstein compte parmi les architectures les plus remarquables du 17ème siècle. Peu de princes disposaient à l'époque d'une résidence comparable. Le nom symbolique du château est thématisé aussi bien dans l'inscription dédicatoire au-dessus du portail principal que dans le cartouche en relief qui le surmonte et qui représente le "baiser de paix". La devise qui l'entoure reflète la compréhension du maître d'ouvrage - "Friede Ernehret - Unfriede Verzehret". À l'intérieur du château, des pièces de style baroque, rococo, classique et historiciste ont été conservées. Aujourd'hui, on y trouve le musée du château avec la salle des fêtes richement décorée de stucs et les appartements ducaux, ainsi que la Kunstkammer, le musée de la nature et le musée historique. Les collections d'art uniques peuvent être visitées dans le musée ducal situé en face. Dans la tour ouest se trouve le théâtre Ekhof - un théâtre baroque qui porte le nom de Conrad Ekhof (1720-1778). Il était considéré comme le "père de l'art dramatique allemand" et dirigeait l'un des premiers théâtres à être joué en continu avec des acteurs permanents. En raison de sa technique scénique originale en bois, le théâtre est considéré comme l'un des plus complets du 17e siècle et est encore joué aujourd'hui.

Schon von Weitem sieht man die beiden Türme von Schloss Friedenstein, die imposant in den Himmel ragen. Sie sind Teil einer gewaltigen frühbarocken Anlage, die inmitten eines ausgedehnten Parks liegt. Herzog Ernst I. von Sachen-Gotha ließ das Schloss zwischen 1643 und 1654 auf den Ruinen seines Vorgängerbaus, der Burg Grimmenstein, errichten. Er gibt ihm den Namen „Friedenstein“ und setzt damit in den kriegsmüden Jahren zum Ende des 30-jährigen Krieges ein Zeichen für eine neue, friedlichere Zeit: Auch auf dem Schlussstein am Hauptportal verewigt der Herzog seine Friedensvision für sein Land mit den Worten „Friede Ernehret, Unfriede Verzehret“.  Im Nordflügel des Schlosses sind die prächtigen barocken und herzoglichen Gemächer aus Barock und Rokoko sowie die Kunstkammer zu sehen, die Keimzelle der Universalsammlung auf dem Friedenstein. (Die klassizistischen Räume im Westflügel sind derzeit wegen Sanierungsarbeiten leider nicht zugänglich). Die Wohnräume sind so einzigartig wie die Exponate vielseitig: Sie reichen von vergoldeten Elefanten und Nautilus-Pokalen über einen originalen Napoleon-Hut bis hin zu präparierten Tigern und astronomischen Geräten. Einen besonderen Schatz beherbergt der Westturm: Hier befindet sich das barocke Ekhof-Theater, eines der wenigen Theater der Welt mit funktionierender Bühnenmaschinerie aus dem 17. Jahrhundert. Der Schlosskomplex beherbergt außerdem das BROMACKER lab, die naturkundliche Ausstellung „Tiere im Turm“ und die Schlosskirche. Zum Friedenstein-Ensemble gehören neben dem Englischen Garten – einem der ältesten auf dem europäischen Festland - auch das Herzogliche Museum am Fuße des Schlosses und die barocke Orangerie.

Już z daleka widać dwie wieże zamku Friedenstein, które imponująco wznoszą się ku niebu. Stanowią one część potężnego kompleksu w stylu wczesnego baroku, położonego pośrodku rozległego parku. Książę Ernst I von Sachsen-Gotha zlecił budowę zamku w latach 1643–1654 na ruinach poprzedniej budowli, zamku Grimmenstein. Nadaje mu nazwę „Friedenstein”, dając tym samym w latach zmęczenia wojną pod koniec wojny trzydziestoletniej znak nowej, spokojniejszej epoki: również na zwieńczeniu głównego portalu książę uwiecznia swoją wizję pokoju dla swojego kraju słowami „Friede Ernehret, Unfriede Verzehret” (Pokój czci, niepokój niszczy).  W północnym skrzydle zamku można obejrzeć wspaniałe barokowe i rokokowe apartamenty książęce, a także gabinet sztuki, który był zalążkiem uniwersalnej kolekcji na Friedensteinie. (Niestety, klasycyzujące pomieszczenia w zachodnim skrzydle są obecnie niedostępne z powodu prac renowacyjnych). Pomieszczenia mieszkalne są tak wyjątkowe, jak różnorodne są eksponaty: od pozłacanych słoni i pucharów z muszli nautilusa, przez oryginalny kapelusz Napoleona, aż po wypchane tygrysy i przyrządy astronomiczne. Szczególny skarb kryje zachodnia wieża: znajduje się tu barokowy teatr Ekhof, jeden z nielicznych teatrów na świecie z działającą machiną sceniczną z XVII wieku. W kompleksie pałacowym znajduje się również BROMACKERlab, wystawa przyrodnicza „Zwierzęta w wieży” oraz kościół pałacowy. Do zespołu Friedenstein, oprócz Ogrodu Angielskiego – jednego z najstarszych na kontynencie europejskim – należą również Muzeum Książęce u podnóża pałacu oraz barokowa oranżeria.
