At the foot of the Rhoen mountains, exactly in the middle of the railroad line Bad Neustadt/Saale - Bischofsheim/Rhoen, which was built in 1885 and has been discontinued in the meantime, as well as on the federal road 279, the idyllic village of Schönau a. d. Brend lies 332 m above sea level in the nature park "Bavarian Rhoen". A settlement is mentioned for the first time in 1207. After various place names, the current spelling "Schönau" was established around 1776, to which "a. d. Brend" was added officially in 1930. Worth seeing is the post-Gothic "Julius-Echter-Kirche" ( Julius-Echter-Church) from 1608 (Catholic church "Hl. Laurentius") standing on a hill with altars from the Bildhausen monastery. In the fall of 2008, the 400th anniversary of the church was honored in a large ceremony. At the foot of the church hill stands the monument to Otto Feick, who invented the "Rhönrad" as a gymnastics and sports device here in 1925 together with the designer Gustav Janz, which is known all over the world today. The name of the village already expresses it, Schönau is situated in the meadow-rich Brendtal and is flanked by deep deciduous and coniferous forests to the left and right. The district of Burgwallbach is embedded about 3 km to the south in the side valley of the Liesbach. The old village of Schönau a. d. Brend, once laid out in the shape of a cross, is occasionally broken up by the contrast of lovingly renovated half-timbered houses. Next to them are public buildings, such as the community center with bakehouse, the Kolping hall, the DJK sports home, the association school, a heated outdoor pool and the kindergarten. The Rhönstraße, Brendstraße and town hall square were redesigned in the course of the village renewal from 2002 to 2004. The "Fosenochtsbrünn", designed and created by the sculptress Eva-Maria Warmuth from Wargolshausen, adorns the town hall square.
