Buttstädt is the largest village in the municipality with just under 2500 inhabitants and is located in the east of the Sömmerda district in Thuringia. Mit knapp 2500 Einwohnern bildet Buttstädt das Zentrum der gleichnamigen Lamdgemeinde im Osten des Landkreises Sömmerda. Im 16. Jahrhundert war Buttstädt Auktionsort einer der bedeutendsten Viehmärkte Europas! Der Wohlstand seiner Bürger schuf mit dem alten Friedhof "Camposanto" einen ungewöhnlichen Bestattungsort, der seinesgleichen sucht. Der historische Altstadtkern ist ein Denkmalensemble und teils von schmalen natursteinernen Gassen geprägt; Rathaus und Michaeliskirche verweisen auf den einstigen Einfluss des sich lieblich und inzwischen bescheiden inszenierenden Ackerbürger-Städtchens unweit von Weimar. Der traditionelle Pferdemarkt bildet das größte Volksfest im Landkreis Sömmerda, das immer am ersten Juli-Wochenende Abertausende Menschen anlockt. Ein Schwimmbad lädt in den Sommermonaten zur Erfrischung ein. Die natürliche Umgebung ist geprägt von einer sanften Hügellandschaft mit Bachauen. Die Kulturstadt Weimar liegt eine ebenso kurzweilige Radtour entfernt, wie die bewaldete Finne mit ihrem professionellen Wanderwegenetz.
