The creation of the 48-hectare landscape park to the south of Weimar’s historic city centre is closely tied to Goethe’s life and influence in Weimar. In 1776 Duke Carl August gifted Goethe a cottage and garden, the famous Goethe Gartenhaus, situated in the Park on the Ilm. In the following years, Goethe and Carl August started landscaping the first section of the park between the town, the castle and Goethe’s Gartenhaus in the new English style. In 1778 they began cultivating the western slope of the Ilm valley with its wooded backdrops, winding paths and park sculptures. A characteristic design element are the visual axes which offer views to important sites both within and outside the park. Numerous natural landmarks and architectural gems, such as the Roman House, the Goethe Gartenhaus, the Park Cave, the Liszt House and the Weimar City Castle at the park’s northern edge offer visitors the possibility of spending the entire day here. The Park on the Ilm is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Classical Weimar” ensemble. As a unique example of Weimar Classicism, it reflects Weimar’s outstanding role as one of Europe’s intellectual centres in the late 18th and early 19th century.

La création de ce parc paysager de 48 hectares en bordure de la vieille ville de Weimar est étroitement liée à la vie et à l'œuvre de Goethe à Weimar. En 1776, le duc Carl August offrit au poète une maison avec jardin, connue aujourd'hui sous le nom de "Goethe-Gartenhaus", située dans le parc sur l'Ilm. Par la suite, Goethe et Carl August planifièrent ensemble les premiers aménagements dans le nouveau goût anglais entre la ville, le château et la maison de jardin de Goethe. Les nombreux axes visuels qui mettent en relation des points marquants à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur du parc sont caractéristiques. De nombreuses œuvres d'art d'architecture de jardin ainsi que la maison romaine, la maison de jardin de Goethe, la grotte du parc, la maison de Liszt et le château de la ville de Weimar, situés à la limite nord du parc, offrent l'occasion d'y passer toute la journée. Le parc sur l'Ilm fait partie du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO "Weimar classique" qui, en tant que témoignage unique de l'époque culturelle du classicisme de Weimar, reflète le rôle éminent de Weimar en tant que centre intellectuel à la fin du 18e et au début du 19e siècle.

Die Entstehung des 48 Hektar großen Landschaftsparks am Rande der Weimarer Altstadt ist eng mit Goethes Leben und Wirken in Weimar verbunden. 1776 schenkte Herzog Carl August dem Dichter ein Haus mit Garten, heute bekannt als das im Park an der Ilm gelegene Goethe-Gartenhaus. In der Folgezeit planten Goethe und Carl August zusammen die ersten Anlagen im neuen englischen Geschmack zwischen Stadt, Schloss und Goethes Gartenhaus. So entstand ab 1778 die Gestaltung des westlichen Ilmhangs mit seinen Gehölzkulissen, Spazierwegen und Parkarchitekturen. Charakteristisch sind die zahlreichen Sichtachsen, die markante Punkte inner- und außerhalb des Parks miteinander in Beziehung setzen. Zahlreiche gartenarchitektonische Kunstwerke sowie das Römische Haus, Goethes Gartenhaus, die Parkhöhle, das Liszt-Haus und das Stadtschloss Weimar am nördlichen Parkrand bieten die Gelegenheit, hier den gesamten Tag zu verbringen. Der Park an der Ilm ist Teil des UNESCO Welterbes "Klassisches Weimar", das als einzigartiges Zeugnis der Kulturepoche Weimarer Klassik die herausragende Rolle Weimars als Geisteszentrum im späten 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhundert widerspiegelt.
