Martin Luther worked in Arnstadt as a young monk and later as a Reformer and companion of Elector Johann Friedrich. The Oberkirche with the adjoining building complex was built in the 13th century as a Franciscan monastery, in which Luther, coming from Erfurt, stayed multiple times as a monk between 1506 and 1508, and is documented to have spent a night there in 1506. The extensive church library contains valuable works of Luther from his lifetime. After the Reformation took hold in Arnstadt in 1533, Luther visited the city again four years later. Luther is said to have been in Arnstadt for the last time on July 7, 1540. At that time, he was traveling with his ill friend Melanchthon from Weimar to Eisenach and possibly took a route through Arnstadt. Johann Sebastian Bach, who stayed in the city from 1703 to 1707, set Lutheran ideas to music as a church musician and composer. Continuing along the Lutherweg northwards, one reaches Molsdorf and then the state capital Erfurt, which has been regarded for centuries as the "Thuringian Rome."

À Arnstadt, Martin Luther a travaillé en tant que jeune moine ainsi que plus tard en tant que réformateur et compagnon de l'électeur Johann Friedrich. Johann Sebastian Bach, qui séjourna en ville de 1703 à 1707, mit en musique la pensée luthérienne en tant que musicien d'église et compositeur. En continuant sur le Lutherweg, on atteint vers le nord, par Molsdorf, la capitale de l'État Erfurt, perçue depuis des siècles comme la « Rome de Thuringe ».

Jahrhundert als Franziskanerkloster, in dem Luther als Mönch von Erfurt aus zwischen 1506 und 1508 mehrmals weilte und nachweislich 1506 einmal übernachtete. Die umfangreiche Kirchenbibliothek besitzt wertvolle Werke Luthers aus seiner Lebzeit. Nachdem 1533 die Reformation in Arnstadt Einzug gehalten hatte, besuchte Luther vier Jahre später die Stadt erneut. Zum letzten Mal soll Luther am 7. Juli 1540 in Arnstadt gewesen sein. Damals zog er mit seinem kranken Freund Melanchthon von Weimar nach Eisenach und nutzte möglicherweise eine Route über Arnstadt. Johann Sebastian Bach, der von 1703 bis 1707 in der Stadt weilte, vertonte das Lutherische Gedankengut als Kirchenmusiker und Komponist. Weiter auf dem Lutherweg gelangt man in nördlicher Richtung über Molsdorf  in die über Jahrhunderte als "thüringisches Rom" empfundene Landeshauptstadt Erfurt.
